BOARD OF APPEALS 688-9541 BUILDING 688-9545 CONSERVATION 688-9530 HEALTH 688-9540 PLANNfNG 688-9535 i� II I I s I r LL II ° W Xg CJ 1 A •• O �► rL °g� Paul Partridge Prom: Kristen Partridge [kristen.partridge @gmail.com] Sent: Thursday, July 08, 2010 8:29 PM To: Paul Partridge Subject: Fwd: proposed porch Attachments: Partridge_1 st floor plan-existing_7.4.10.pdf ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Stephen Foster Date: Sun, Jul 4, 2010 at 11:16 AM Subject: proposed porch To: Kristen Partridge Kristen&Paul: see attached plan showing existing porch/deck note location of septic tank with respect to existing porch structure and underground drainage pipe there are two potential issues concerning the septic tank; (reference 380 CMR 15.211 - state of MA dept. of envir. protection) proximity of porch/deck foundation(concrete piers); the required setback from the septic tank to the foundation was 5' on my last(similar)project this setback is not shown on the state website...it may be a local ruling proximity of existing drain pipe title V lists this setback distance at either 5' or 25' the local board of health can clarify these setbacks I would recommend bringing a copy of the attached sketch to them for discussion they would be able to provide setback distances (noted above) so as to allow the design to proceed with full knowledge of all design parameters for your information, the bah will also most likely need to 'sign off on the permit "form U" for the porch renovation... so you might as well cross this bridge now vs. later alternatively: (but not recommended) the owner could provide drawings which totally ignore the existence of the septic system I you may receive a building permit if you get'signed off without any discovery/discussion concerning the septic system however you do not want to have the septic tank'issue' be discovered by the authorities during the construction as this may lead to costly modifications or delays of the remodeling project keep in mind that it is the responsibility of the permit applicant to provide the necessary design, engineering ,etc. to the authorities to prove that they are 'code' compliant and deserving of a permit I can share my knowledge of the above in greater detail please call me to discuss the above steve foster z
