NORTH ANDOVER = The don'owners of J&M Convenience Store and
and Deli on Salem Street are hop- the
ing to open(a second business,—a lani
pizza shop—right next door. wal
Planning officials will decide E
tomorrow whether to allow the Me
Xenakis family to open the busi- Iasi
ness without undergoing a lengthy opE
review process. The Planning tiol
Board approved the site plan for del
the family's plaza at 701707 A
Salem St. in 1997, saying the 41
parking spaces there were suffi-
cient to support retail, office or
deli businesses,Planning Director
J.Justin Woods said.
The family would normally
have to go through a complete,'
new review to open a restaurant i
—for which the town requires
more parking—but they are ask-
ing for a waiver.
'The idea is to find a business
that would be busier at night,
because Dunkin Donuts is open
here in the morning and they're
pretty busy," said James M.
Xenakis, who manages the store
and is helping his father and uncle' 4
plan the new business.
Xenakis,also a town selectman,
` said he and other staff at the store
asked customers"what business
they would like to see in the plaza
and the "overwhelming sugges-
tion"was a pizza shop.
"There really is no other place
in the area to get pizza,"he said,!
"You have to go downtown or to
another part of North Andover to
get it."
Xenakis said the business is
unlikely to cause a parking prob-
lem because it will be only take-
out and will be busiest at night,
while the convenience store,
Dunkin Donuts and dry cleaners:
in the,plaza are busier earlier,in
the day.,The.pizza shot) will
require no changes to the outside
of the building,he said.
The space was occupied:by
Champion Factory, a gymnastics
studio,until it moved to Chicker
ing Road about a year ago. The
proposed pizza shop already has a
food license,which was issued by
selectmen in April, said Xenakis,
who recused himself from that
deliberation and vote. +
