Minutes for May Meeting
th
May 9, 2008 7:00 PM
DPW Building
Attendees: Tina Klein, Steve Daly, Bruce Thibodeau, Martha Mittelstaedt, Lisa Conti, Karen
Kline, Steve Parkes, Keith Alter, Debbie Eaton, Judy Walker, Norm Bagley, and Pete Murley.
Minutes from April meeting accepted.
Pete Murley to take minutes for May meeting
Old business:
th
Shredding event Ï May 17 at DPW Ï 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Tina to email notice to all Recycling Captains. (about 300)
Debbie has sent notices to the schools, and Martha has sent releases to the appropriate
publications. Pete will contact Universal Shredding and arrange to have their truck at the
DPW building by 8:45 AM. Pete will meet them there and get them situated.
Rain barrels: - 79 barrels were sold which was considered to be a successful number.
Earth Day clean-up: - Approximately 300 volunteers participated. (35 were walk-ons) The
picker-upper-grabber things were deemed to be a big hit. Karen suggested pre-assigning the
tough areas. It was also suggested that we think about distributing supplies before the actual
day to make things a little less hectic. Kudos to Norm et al for a successful operation.
TBI update: - The contract has been sent to TBI. If no more changes are requested or
questions raised the contract will be discussed with the selectmen. Topic is tentatively
th
scheduled for their May 19 meeting. Should everything go smoothly we could be in
st
business by June 1. Nobody seemed particularly optimistic about that happening. Tina
will put a notice in OPT that it may be happening.
Discussions of the containers remain unsettled. There are 700 recycling stickers available
but it appears that they wonÔt stick to all surfaces, especially under cold weather conditions.
Folks can use their own containers if they are lidded. There was some concern about people
not understanding that Ñsingle streamÒ does not mean combining your trash with your
recycling. Notices will be sent through the schools to direct people to the website.
By-law question. Tina will locate the by-law concerning recycling requirements Ï if any Ï
for apartment and condo complexes.
Lawn signs: Tina will store them in her basement if Bruce can find them
New Business:
School recycling: - As it is the end of the school year, Bruce will ask Charley DeRosa at IPR
if the schools can mix paper and cardboard in the dumpsters to help move the process
along.
I should point out that it was at this moment in the meeting that Debbie informed us that
st
she is moving to Westwood on July 1 and will be resigning her seat on the committee. (We
will miss her.) Lisa will be taking over the task of funneling the school announcements to
the appropriate people. No hands were raised to make the lawn signs.
Town-wide yard sale. Ï 7/21 and 7/22 Ï Steve Daly has devised a category spreadsheet to
help shoppers pinpoint their destinations and help sellers reach their target market. It
looked to everyone to be a really good idea. It was also noted that a media blitz for the
event would include the website, Eagle Tribune, Citizen, Town Crossing, schools, cable tv,
and church bulletins. Debbie is going to put it on CraigÔs List, and Karen is going to post
flyers in Lawrence. Steve is working on a registration form with the goal of having all sellers
th
identified by June 14.
Lawrence meeting concerning the Building Materials Resource Center: - These folks are
looking for a location in Lawrence to establish what is already a going concern in Roxbury.
People bring over cast-off building materials such as cabinets and doors, and other people
buy them. The meeting was attended by Bruce and the Steves who reported that the plan
definitely has potential.
Random items as time permitted:
Associate members Ï The selectmen have agreed to allow the appointment of associate
members who would carry a one year commitment. These members may be appointed by
THE CHAIR, or as we like to say, Tina.
Update Ï The committee has been asked by the selectmen to prepare an update of all
appropriate numbers. I have no names written in the minutes, but IÔm pretty sure it will be
done by somebody who actually knows what the numbers are.
Zero Waste Day Ï This involves people dropping off ÑstuffÒ that they want to get rid of but might
be of some use to a charity. The participating charities set up trucks at the site and the
ÑstuffÒ is distributed at the moment it is dropped off. Andover has been doing this for
several years. It was suggested that we invite Marya Lundgren, of the Andover Recycling
Committee Lundgrens, to a fall meeting to discuss the event and how we might go about
organizing our own.

The next meeting will be May 29 at the DPW building. 7:00 PM.
