Minutes from August 10, 2006 NASWAC Meeting

New Business:
DEP Grant Application
Deadline for early-decision “consulting time” requests (e.g. Carolyn Dann’s time)
must be submitted by Aug. 15.
Grant application deadline for recycling containers, banners, etc. is Sept. 15
If we intend to apply for the public space containers, we will need to discuss
logisticsfor collection through email over the course of the month, prior to next
month’s meeting.
School Recycling Initiatives
Goal is to make recycling fully accessible to the N.A. schools
Each school building needs a cardboard collection system
DeRosa (Integrated Paper Recyclers) has agreed to place a dumpster at each
school location. Exact dumpster locations need to be arranged with the schools
(site survey).
DEP grant money may be available to perform site surveys and to fund
improvements (fencing, etc.)to accommodate these dumpsters, but that
request would have to be submitted along with our Technical Assistance
proposal.
NA DPW would make the request in behalf of NA.
If awarded, invoices forany of this work must be submitted before June 30 ‘07
to qualify for re-imbursement.
DPW would oversee such projects.
Fall edition “One Person’s Trash”
The committee voted to suspend the ‘06 Fall edition due to time constraints.
Content to be gathered for the Winter edition.
Town Wide Yard Sale: debriefing
First TWYS attracted 32 households bringing in $320.00
Expenses totaled approx. $50.00
Wet weather may have cancelled some of the sales. Next year sales should be
listed as “rain or shine”.

1June weekend after Father’s Day works well for future TWYS.
Suggestion: method to categorize items for sale to aid shoppers (e.g, product
codes for electronics, baby items, etc.)
NASWAC Redeemable Can/Waste Audit
Steve submitted status report and contact list
Keith Alterwill contact Boy Scouts and arrange best date for audit.
Tinawill contact Lillian Montellofor her box truck availability.
Tinato followup with National Park Service in Lowell to see if we can borrow the
sorting table they use for the Lowell Folk Festival
Book Recycling Program
Got Books? Local company will collect usable books in containers they supply.
No cost to town. www.gotbooks.com
Stevewill contact Sue Ellen Holmes at Stevens Mem. Library to discuss
feasibility and options to site collection bins at the library.
Tinato contact Fernando at Got Books to arrange a site visit and discuss
container size.
Button Cell Batteries
Programis available to receive $100.00 per pound of recycled button batteries
(approx. 400 batteries). Such batteries are found in watches, and hearing aids.
Maximum award is $500 per year per municipality.
Boy Scouts may want to consider this as a fundraiser. 400 bottles/cans=
$20.00. 400 button batteries= $100.00
The committee recognizes the extra efforts of former DPW office person,
Bernadette, to aid our committee and would like to show our appreciation. Further
discussion at next meeting.
