Meeting Notes, NASWAC March 10, 2005

I.Meeting was called to order approximately 7:05

A call to Waste Management –Dan the Man.Waste ban-public housing, Jimmy-no
complications.McCabe Court-massive boxes, housing authority understanding?
Elderly housing off Waverly (Morkeski Meadows)-no issues.
Trash tonnage-no way to know changes.No solid waste tonnage this month, change since Jan
st
31?8 tons ahead of fiscal ’04 (tipped 8 tons ahead), staying as we were.Growth of tonnage is
gone, discussion of how to obtain household #’s (multi-family, etc.)We will continue to sticker
boxes per Jim Nocella.
Rain barrels and water conservations kits are available.25 rain barrels (subsidized) and 50
conservation kits.New England rainbarrel has supplied these.
ACTION ITEM: Joan and Leslie will do a press release for these to get the wordout so people
can pre-order before the May 13 cut off date.
Early purchase is a deal.Reduced rate with one delivery.Kits have a hose conservator, shower
conservator, bladder for your toilet-(aerator), etc.Can just take parts of the kit.Need to check
the grant to see how we can sell these, $6.00-$10.00 to promote these early.Sheep Shearing as
a giveaway.
Facelift for the Recycling Center-Paul Stewart finished signs on coated resin boards and will meet
with Bill to show him, and get permission with the signs.(Police need to be informed of our sub-
operatives), just kidding here!!
Poster and essay contest-mailed and emailed to Carolyn Dan and the Children’s room at the
Library.The deadline is March 15, judged before our next meeting.Winners notified by April 1.
They will be thanked by selectmen, and Top of the Scales will display the kids work at the
restaurant under the table glass.
ACTION ITEM:Steve will contact Lisa about kids reciting their essays to air on the cable station.
All the kids will be covered!
Grades K-12-judges-Karen, Leslie, Joanne, Tina and Margaret.Three grouping for essays, cash
prize for poster winners.Two winners for poster, prize money to come from the town money.
Kids get to choose what they want for prizes.A display at the High School for town meeting?
Zero Waste Day at Brickstone Plaza-May 7 9am-noon (8-2, time needed for setup and
breakdown).Lazarus House and Project Home Again (Temple Emanuel).Good stuff needed
(St. Vincent DePaul), MSPCA.Andover is providing 2 dumpsters, no cost for tipping them.Open
to the Merrimac Valley.Non Profits picked?How?(Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts?)Shelters also
need linens and towels, books, CD’s Community book solutions, Andover Historical Society.

NEW BUSINESS: (taken by Steve Daly)
I.Recycling web site re-design: Bill Hmurciak has staff people who can make minor
updates to the website, but would not be able to re-design major parts of the site.
The OPT editions will be added to the site.
ACTION ITEM: Bill to speak with his staff to coordinate website updates.
II.Earth Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 23.We are anticipating the donation of
the use of roll-offs from Wheelabrator
N.A> ACTION: Steve to re-confirm with Scott Emerson regarding delivery of two 30 yard roll-
offs.These should be placed in the same location as last year.Ideal drop off is Friday
afternoon and pick up on Monday AM.
Tina requests that inquiries to the DPW regarding Earth Day be directed to her at:
recycle@townofnorthandover.com
Regarding sign up, those who signed up in the past will be emailed and asked to participate
again.
Regarding plastic bag donations, will specify 3 mil thick bags, no thinner.We have ample
supply of gloves.
III.Hazardous Waste Day is Saturday, April 16.
IV.Publishing in the town warrant.Two or more pages may be available for recycling
information in the town warrant for the next town meeting.Topics could include:
Recycling calendar, Recycling guidelines, Waste Ban info.
