Meeting Minutes, NASWAC May 12, 2005
Place: DPW Conference Room

1. Meeting was called to order 7:20 p.m..
2. March and April minutes accepted
3. Old Business
a. cardboard recycling
Tina called Cathy Pereira to say that she sent an e-mail to recycling captains with phone
number of Waste Management to call if cardboard is not being stickered.
Need to continue with stickers on improperly disposed cardboard.
Town collectors should be taking cardboard if the resident has made areasonable
attempt to dispose properly.
Some cardboard is being left behind because paper section of truck fills first and to finish
route, collectors may leave some paper behind and come back later
Town currently runs 3 recycling trucks on T,W, Th and 2 recycling trucks on M, F (the
third truck was added in January).
b. water conservation kits
Town will receive 50 kits to give away at sheep shearing; will separate into components;
kits include low flow shower heads, faucet aerators, hose nozzles, and rain gauges.
Will follow up with recipients of these items.
c. poster contest
Have CD with power point presentation of posters from contest to display on CAM-TV.
Discussed taping essay authors reading essays and using this as voice over for poster
display.
ACTIONS ITEMS
Steve took the CD and will follow-up with CAM-TV
Karen Kline to work with Steve to schedule students to read their essays for the camera.
d. tonnage numbers
March '05 tonnage is 94 tons less trash than March '04.
No numbers for April yet; recycling is up but don't have exact amount
Try to get these numbers into summer OPT

f. changes to Earth day
try to get businesses to donate money for 3 mil bags which are available at Home
Depot/Lowes; currently can't get 3 mil bags donated
try to get more businesses involved perhaps by encouraging business participant teams
change date to one week later to avoid school vacation week
ACTION ITEMS:
Karen Kline to sendthank you notes to bag donors
Tina to send spreadsheet of volunteers to Mark Rees for thank you notes
Tina to send thank you to Scott Emerson for dumpster donation
Karen to send thank you to teacherswho participated in poster and essay contest
g. poster/essay contest follow-up
gave lapel pins to all participants younger than high school
ACTION ITEMS:
Karen to draft letter to high schoolers acknowledging appreciation of their effort
Tina to put essays in notebook
Tina to send Bill receipts to get reimbursement for prizes
h. school update
currently, Franklin, Sargent and Kittredge are recycling water bottles
Sargent will do end-of-year recycling clean-up with four extra toters and pick-up on two
Mondays
Sargent shoe collection successful; collected over 200 pairs of shoes to be delivered to
DPW on May 21 and then to Boston on May 23 along with several other town
collections by Tina and Carolyn Dann.
Carolyn is working on trying to get a more local site for shoe collection so this can be

an annual event, targeting America Recycles Day on November 15.
ACTION ITEMS:
Joanne to send Karen and Leslie information on implementing water bottle recycling so
they can talk to Thomson, High school and Middle School
Joanne to follow up with Atkinson

OPT is funded for '05 -'06
all items in for summer except one photo which Tina will take care of
4. New Business
a. Web page
Margaret and Tina will meet with concerned citizen Deb Lynch on 5/18;need to update
web site before OPT publish date of 6/17
b. sheep shearing
Will have booth manned by some committee members and by recycling captains
c. summer meeting schedule: 6/9, 7/14, 8/11. We will meet on an as needed basis
