Construction of a Deck
Conservation Conditions of Approval,NACC #18
On August 7,2006 J. Sirois Woodworking&Construction (contractor) filed for a small project
review(section 4.4(A) of the North Andover Wetland Regulations) on behalf of the homeowner of
188 Chestnut Street. The proposed work includes razing the existing deck in order to construct a
26'x12' deck (specificaUy18'x12' deck with an 8'x12'landing)within the Buffer Zone to an adjacent
Bordering Vegetated Wetland(BVW).The deck will be built larger than what currently exists, and
new sonotubes will be added to bring the structure up to the MA Building Code. The deck is
proposed approximately 85' from the wetland resource area at its closest point. All demolition and
construction activities will be performed by hand.
Conditions:
1. The total square footage of the proposed deck exceeds the 300 s.£maximum area allowed under
the small projects review,as described under Section 4.4(A) of the North Andover Wetlands
Regulations. Therefore, the deck will need to be reduced by one (1) foot in any location to
comply with the maximum square footage allowed under the aforementioned provision. This
modification shall be reflected in the building permit application.
2. Due to the flatness in topography, the distance from the wetland to the approved work, and that
the work is being completed by hand, erosion controls are not required. However, the NACC
reserves the right to impose the use of erosion controls (hay bales &/ or silt fence)if the site
exhibits erosion,or any noticeable degradation of surface water quality discharging from the site.
Should the erosion control be required by the NACC or the Conservation Department, they
shall be installed within 48 hours of the request The erosion control barrier will be properly
installed (silt fence trenched 4—6-inches into the ground, backed by double-staked hay bales)
and shall be inspected and approved by the Conservation Department These temporary
erosion control measures shall remain intact until all disturbed areas have been permanently
stabilized to prevent erosion. All erosion prevention and sedimentation protection measures
found necessary during construction shall be implemented at the direction of the Department or
the NACC.
3. Accepted engineering and construction standards and procedures shall be followed in the
completion of the project
4. Upon completion of the approved project and site stabilization, please contact the
Conservation Department for a final inspection.
