Trail Maintenance Activities and Improvements

Conservation Conditions of Approval, NACC #66
Pursuant to section 4.4.2 G&J of the North Andover Wetlands Protection Regulations the Friends of
North Andover Trails,applicant/representative,filed for a small project for work proposed at the at
the locust trails at Mazurenko Farm&Carter Hill,Osgood Hill,James Swamp,Foster Farm,and
Shawsheen River,North Andover. The proposal indicates that the purpose of the work is to provide
continuing public access to town owned Open Space in the interests of passive recreation and
improved stewardship.
The project entails cutting back trail obstructions such as new growth of bushes,fallen trees and
branches,and herbaceous vegetation. This work will be conducted using hand tools only within
wetland resource areas and the associated 25-foot No-Disturbance buffer zone. Power hand tools
may be used in areas outside of the wetland resource areas and associated 25'no-disturbance zone
provided that such power tools will not cause soil and/or plant root disturbance. Trail crossings of
intermittent streams and wet areas will be maintained by means of stepping stones from the
surrounding terrain. No wetland soil will be permanently disturbed as part of this proposal,and no
brush will be stockpiled within 100 feet of a wetland area. This work will occur between the months
of April and November of this year.

During the April 14,2010 public meeting,the North Andover Conservation Commission(NACC)
voted unanimously to approve this project as described above. The following conditions were hereby
mandated for the proposed work:
CONDITIONS:
1. The Conservation Department shall be contacted at least two (2) business days prior to
the commencement of any work activities.
2. All work activities within the wetland resource areas and its associated 25-foot no-
disturbance zone shall be conducted using hand tools and equipment only. However,
power tools may be used in areas outside of the 25-foot no-disturbance zone,provided
that such power tools will not cause soil and/or plant root disturbance.
3. Any branches,debris,or cuttings shall either be bagged in recyclable paper bags and
taken to the Recycling Center or left in small piles within upland (non-wetland) areas to
provide and enhance wildlife habitat for birds and small mammals.
4. All invasive vegetative species shall be removed from the site and properly disposed of.
Invasives shall not be left in any piles as wildlife habitat enhancement areas. Please
contact the Conservation Department should you need further information and/or
guidance in the identification of such invasive species.
5. This permit shall expire 5 years from the date of this letter.
