These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes. /1 circlehealth Period of Contagiousness •You may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. •People with the flu are most contagious in the first 3-4 days after their illness begins. • Some otherwise healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick. /1 circlehealth Complications of Flu •Bacterial pneumonia •Ear infections •Sinus infections •Worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes /"1 circleheaith People at High Risk from Flu *People 65 years and older *Any age with certain chronic medical conditions (asthma, diabetes, heart disease) *Pregnant women *Young children circlehealth Preventing Seasonal Flu *The first and most important step in preventing flu is to get a flu vaccination each year. *CDC also recommends everyday preventive actions (like staying away from people who are sick, covering coughs and sneezes and frequent handwashing) to help slow the spread of germs that cause respiratory (nose, throat, and lungs) illnesses, like flu. *Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that maybe contaminated with germs like the flu. /1 circlehealth visease; Burden of Influenza '- Deaths: 12,000 - 56,000 Hospitalizations: 140,000 — 710,000 Cases: 9 200p000 — 35600,000 GDC estimates that influenza has resulted in between 9.2 million and 35,6 million illnesses, between 140,000 and 710,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 and 56,000 deaths annually since 2010. circlehealth Why get v -again-st influenza (flu)? In a nevus conference last week,, Acting Director Dr. Anne schuchat said the CDC continues to recommend parents get their children vaccinated even though it's late in the season. The latest weekly flu report indicates a slight increase in rates of flu-like illness in Massachusetts over the past seven days. Flu continues to circulate widely in our communities and if you have not gotten a :flu shot yet this season, there is still ample reason to do so. You can find a flu shot near you by calling your health care provider or by visiting htt s: ,vaccinefinder.or which includes listings for local boards of health and pharmacies that continue to offer flu vaccinations. The CDC reported 75% of the 80+ children who died nationally were not vaccinated. The vaccine was more effective on kids than adults this year. circlehealth \y` \A In `_ ee lReported to CCC by Pubic H alit Laboratodes,T onal rmar)F 2417-18 Season, week ending Feb 10,`018 Regmted by-- .S.
