Dear Mr. Ahearn,
The North Andover Historical Commission has reviewed your application for the
demolition of 254 Greene Street per the Town bylaw Chapter 82. The purpose of this
bylaw is to allow an opportunity of up to 12 months to preserve historically significant
structures. After a public hearing on March 15, 2010 and the review of various records
and reports, it is the Commission's opinion that this structure is significant to the history
of the Town, and is preferably preserved.
The Joseph Poor House (c. 1800) is one of the two last two physical remainders of the
145 acre Poor (aka Greene Hill) farm. In the mid 1800's when the town was a summer
retreat for Bostonians, this distinctive Georgian -Federal transitional style represents a
gentleman's farm. It was later owned by Capt Bigelow, Chief Engineer of the Essex
Company. (Roper, MHC Form B)
The Commission encourages you to seek alternative options to preserve, or
rehabilitate this structure. We look forward to working with you towards that end. Our
next regular Commission meeting is on April 12, 3 pm at Town Hall. Please call if you
have any questions.
Regards,
I
