The purpose of the inspection was to observe the building subgrade and.assess whether.it appeared suitable for support of the proposed house and backfill materials. The results of the subgrade inspection are T provided herein. Prior to our foundation inspection, the site had been grubbed and cleared of all trees. The site was observed to slope down from the east (Boston Road grade level) towards the west.s-;The western.portion of the site, which abuts existing wetlands was about 15 feet lower in grade than the eastern portion of the site. The Geotechnical Engineer from MET was informed by Todd from Charles R. Todd Construction that the site would be filled approximately 14 feet to achieve the proposed slab elevation of the house. The ground surface within the footprint area of the proposed house was observed to consist of dark brown/brown, fine to medium sand with some silt, little root material, trace gravel, and trace cobbles. Todd Construction) utilized a dozer to remove the unsuitable topsoil/subsoil layer from the house footprint area and its zone of stress influence. Based on approximately 10 feet of fill required to achieve the bottom of footing elevation, the zone of stress influence of the house foundation will extend approximately 10 feet beyond the foundation perimeter. Upon observation of the excavation effort, approximately 6 to 18-inches of the topsoil/subsoil layer was removed to expose the underlying, naturally occurring glacial till deposits. The glacial till deposits generally consisted of brown/tan, fine to medium sand with some silt, little gravel, and little cobbles. The glacial till deposits that were observed to exist within the house footprint area and the foundations zone of stress influence appeared firm and stable and was considered suitable to support the proposed house and backfill material. The backfill material below the house and its zone of stress influence should be placed in 12-inch maximum loose lifts and be compacted to at least 95 percent of the materials maximum dry density as determined by ASTM Specification D-1557. A field technician from MET should perform field density testing on the compacted backfill material to verify that the material was placed in accordance with the recommendations presented in this letter. The adequacy of the backfill compaction efforts will be reported under separate cover at a later date. We trust this letter meets with your current needs.
