Wyssling, PE Head of Structural Engineering scott.wyssling@vivintsolar.com Mr. Dan Rock, Project Manager January 28, 2016 Vivint Solar 24 Normac Road Woburn MA 01801 Re: Post Structural Certification Swiniarski Residence 46 Putnam Rd North Andover, MA S-4685596 5.98 kW System Dear Mr. Rock: Pursuant to your request, a representative from our company conducted a post installation site visit under my supervision and provided post installation photos for the above referenced solar panel installation. As you are aware, this office initially prepared a structural assessment of the proposed solar panel installation, the adequacy of the connections for this system and identified maximum spacing of the connections. The photographs show panel support locations and spacing which conform to our structural assessment. Acceptable minor changes to the layout include panel position, support spacing less than or equal to 64", and/or additions or deletions of panels at roof locations. Based upon the post installation site visit, our office certifies the solar panel installation for this roof and that it was in conformance to our structural assessment report dated October 23, 2015, Ecolibrium Solar product installation criteria, and the layout plan as specified in our report. This letter pertains only to the panel support attachments to the roof framing and not the engineered photovoltaic panel products, components, panel positioning, or electrical related installations/connections. This certification is based on the 8th Edition Residential Code (2009 International Residential Code with Massachusetts Amendments), professional engineering assessment and judgment and covers this dwellings assessment for solar panel connections and support only. Wyssling, PE Senior Manager of Engineering scott.wyssling@vivintsolar.com October 23, 2015 Mr. Dan Rock, Project Manager Vivint Solar 3301 North Thanksgiving Way, Suite 500 Lehi, UT 84043 Re: Structural Engineering Services Swiniarski Residence 46 Putnam Rd, North Andover MA S-4685596 5.98 kW Dear Mr. Rock: Pursuant to your request, we have reviewed the following information regarding solar panel installation on the roof of the above referenced home: 1. Site Visit/Verification Form prepared by a Vivint Solar representative identifying specific site information including size and spacing of members for the existing roof structure. 2. Design drawings of the proposed system including a site plan, roof plan and connection details for the solar panels. This information was prepared by the Design Group and will be utilized for approval and construction of the proposed system. 3. Photovoltaic Rooftop Solar System Permit Submittal identifying design parameters for the solar system. 4. Photographs of the interior and exterior of the roof system identifying existing structural members and their conditions. Based on the above information we have evaluated the structural capacity of the existing roof system to support the additional loads imposed by the solar panels and have the following comments related to our review and evaluation: Description of Residence: The existing residence is typical wood framing construction with the roof system consisting of the following: • Roof Sections (1, 2, 3, and 4): Roof section is composed of 2x8 dimensional lumber at 16" on center. The attic space is unfinished and photos indicate that there was free access to visually inspect the size and condition of the roof members. All wood material utilized for the roof system is assumed to be Spruce-Pine-Fir #2 or better with standard construction components. The existing roofing material consists of composite shingle. Our review of the photos of the exterior roof does not indicate any signs of settlement or misalignment caused by overstressed underlying members. Stability Evaluation: A. Wind Uplift Loading 1. Refer to attached Ecolibrium Solar calculations sheet for ASCE/SEI 7-10 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and other Structures, wind speed of 100 mph based on Exposure Category B and 22 and 20 degree roof slopes on the dwelling areas. Ground snow load is 50 PSF for Exposure B, Zone 2 per(ASCE/SEI 7-10). 2. Total area subject to wind uplift is calculated for the Interior, Edge and Corner Zones of the dwelling. age2of2 B. Loading Criteria 10 PSF = Dead Load (roofing/framing) 50 PSF = Live Load 3 PSF = Dead Load (solar panels/mounting hardware) Total Dead Load= 13 PSF The above values are within acceptable limits of recognized industry standards for similar structures and in accordance with the 2009 International Residential Code with Massachusetts Amendments. Analysis performed on the existing roof structure utilizing the above loading criteria indicates that the existing members will support the additional panel loading without damage, if installed correctly. C. Roof Structure Capacity 1. The photographs provided of the attic space and roof rafters show that the framing is in good condition with no visible signs of damage caused by prior overstressing. D. Solar Panel Anchorage 1. The solar panels shall be mounted in accordance with the most recent "Ecolibrium Solar Installation Manual", which can be found on the Ecolibrium Solar website (ecolibriumsolar.com). If during solar panel installation, the roof framing members appear unstable or deflect non-uniformly, our office should be notified before proceeding with the installation. 2. The solar panels are 1 '/z' thick and mounted 4 '/2" off the roof for a total height off the existing roof of 6". At no time will the panels be mounted higher than 6"above the existing plane of the roof. 3. Maximum allowable pullout per lag screw is 205 lbs/inch of penetration as identified in the Nation Design Standards (NDS) of timber construction specifications for Spruce-Pine-Fir assumed. Based on our evaluation, the pullout value, utilizing a penetration depth of 2 %2', is less than the maximum allowable per connection and therefore is adequate. 4. Roof Sections (1, 2, 3, and 4): Considering the roof slopes, the size, spacing, condition of the roof, the panel supports shall be placed at and attached no greater than every fourth roof member as panels are installed perpendicular across members and no greater than the panel length when installed parallel to the members (portrait). No panel supports spacing shall be greater than four(4) spaces or 64"o/c, whichever is less. 5. Panel support connections shall be staggered to distribute load to adjacent members. Based on the above evaluation, with appropriate panel anchors being utilized the roof system will adequately support the additional loading imposed by the solar panels. This evaluation is in conformance with the 2009 International Residential Code with Massachusetts Amendments, current industry standards and practice, and the information supplied to us at the time of this report. Said premise affected is property with fi•ontage on the North side of Putnam Road within the R-4 zoning district. The following voting members were present: Ellen P. McIntyre,Joseph D. LaGrasse, Richard J. Byers,Albert P. Manzi, III,and Richard M. Vaillancourt. The following non-voting members were present: Thomas D. Ippolito, Daniel S. Braese and Michael P. Liporto. Upon a motion by Ellen P.McIntyre and 2"d by Richard M. The Family Suite shall be occupied by Marie Gallant, mother of Tracy L.Swiniarski, one of the residing owners of the main dwelling unit; 2. The Special Permit shall expire at the time that Marie Gallant ceases to occupy the family suite; 3. The Special Permit shall expire at the time the premises are conveyed to any person, partnership, trust, corporation or other entity; 4. The applicant, by acceptance of the Certificate of occupancy issued pursuant to the Special Permit, grants the Building Inspector or his lawful designee the right to inspect the premises annually. 5. The Special Permit may be modified to accept other family members per the Bylaw with Board approval. Voting in favor: Ellen P. McIntyre,Joseph D.LaGrasse, Richard J. Byers,Albert P.Manzi, III, and Richard M. Vaillancourt. The Board finds that owing to circumstances relating to the shape of the land and the placement of the structure especially affects 46 Putnam Road(Map 21,Parcel 5)but does not affect generally the Residential 4 zoning district in which it is located and that a literal enforcement of the provisions of Paragraph 7.3 &Table 2 would involve substantial hardship, financial or otherwise,to the petitioner. The Board finds that the left side abutters,Alison& Brian Trundy, 38 Putnam Road, wrote a letter stating their"intention to support and/or expedite the approval process",the left rear abutter,Andrew Sullivan,37 Pembrook Road, wrote a letter stating"we fully support this proposed addition"and that 3 other abutters(including the right rear abutter)signed a statement that they had seen the plans for the Family Suite and had no objection. There was no written or spoken opposition. The Board finds that the dwelling is 27.4' from the left side setback, the existing driveway is on the left side, and the dwelling is 16.4' from the right side setback. The Board finds that desirable relief may be granted without substantial detriment to the public good and without nullifying or substantially derogating from the intent or purpose of the North Andover Bylaw. Also, the Board finds that the applicant has satisfied the provisions of Section 4,Paragraph 4.122.22,and Section 9, Paragraph 9.2 of the Zoning Bylaw and that the granting of this Special Permit for a Family Suite at 46 Putnam Road(Map 21,Parcel 5)on the 2"d floor of a proposed 2-stall garage and breezeway is an appropriate location for a Family Suite. The Board finds that this use,as developed by the building&site plans, will not adversely affect the neighborhood. There will be no nuisance or serious hazard to vehicles or pedestrians since there is provision for the required off-street parking. Adequate and appropriate facilities are provided to the existing residential dwelling and will be provided for the proper operation of a Family Suite. The Board finds that the proposed left side addition of a first floor breezeway and 2-stall garage and a second floor Family Suite will not be substantially more detrimental rhood and that this use, a Family Suite addition to a single than the existing single-family dwelling to the neighbo family dwelling is in harmony with the general purpose and intent of this Bylaw.
