CLANCY PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER 601 ASBURY AVENUE NATIONAL PARK, NJ 08063 (856) 358-1125 ]FAX: (856) 358-1511 Date: December 7, 2015 Re: Structural Roof Certification Subj: Clementi Residence, 505 Great Pond Rd, North Andover MA We have provided a review of the house roof construction of the above named property in regards to verifying the capacity of the existing roof for installation of a new Solar Panel Array. We have found the residence roof to be of wood frame construction bearing walls with Roof 1 and 2 are of 2x6 @ 16" rafter framed roof and are sheathed with 1/2" ext -ply decking and a single layer of composite shingle roofing. The wood framed roof structure bears directly upon the framed exterior wall system. The existing members meet the required (MA 780 CMR) IRC -2009 table 802 design span ratings with sufficient capacity to carry the 2.89#/sf additional load imposed by the proposed solar array per the details below. Installation of solar rack systems shall be as follows: Each panel row shall be supported upon 2 mounting rails. Rails shall be screw anchored through roof and directly to rafters or purlins below. Rail attachment points to rafters shall be staggered each row with exception to the first fastener row from the gable end which is attached to two adjacent rafters/trusses with Stainless Steel fasteners. Rail attachment to roof shall be fastened 16-32"o.c. at corners and 48" o.c. through the field. Rails are to be placed at 24-48" o.c. on the roof. When installed per the above specifications the system shall meet the required 100 MPH wind load and 50 PSF ground snow load requirements. Taggart, Vice President Products December 18, 2014 Page 1 of 20 Subject: IronRidge XR100 Rail, Roof Flush Mounting System — Structural Analysis Dear Sir: We have analyzed the IronRidge XR100 Rail for the subject solar module support system and determined that, for the configurations and criteria described below, it is in compliance with the applicable sections of the following Reference Documents: Codes: ASCE/SEI 7-10 Min. Design Loads for Buildings & Other Structures International Building Code 2012 Edition Other: AC428, Acceptance Criteria for Modular Framing Systems Used to Support PV Modules, dated Effective November 1, 2012 by ICC -ES Aluminum Design Manual, 2010 Edition The IronRidge XR100 Rail is an extruded aluminum section with an overall depth of 2.438 in. and a net area of 0.583 sq.in. The rails are used to support solar modules, typically, on the roof of a building. See Exhibit A — attached. The rails are clamped to aluminum angle brackets that are either attached directly to the roof framing or attached to a stand that is screwed to the roof framing. The rails are mounted across the slope with a small clearance (flush mounting) to the underlying roof structure. The installed solar modules are at the same slope as the underlying roof structure. All loads are transferred to the roof framing through the angle brackets by simple bi-axial flexure of the rails. The maximum span of the rails is governed by either the mid -span flexural stresses or the deflection requirement that the rail not come into contact with the roof. The effect of seismic loads (for all design categories A -F) have been determined to be less than the effect due to wind loads in all load conditions and combinations. Therefore, the maximum allowable spans for common load cases are shown in the tables below. Tables IA -9A are for modules with a maximum long dimension of 67.5 inches and Tables 1B -9B are for modules with a maximum long dimension of 78.5 inches. Starling Madison Lofquist, Inc. Taggart Page 20 of 20 IronRidge XR100 Rail, Roof Flush Mounting System — Structural Analysis Notes — Tabulated values are based on the following criteria: 1. Building mean roof height = 30 ft 2. Risk Category I 3. Solar maximum module long dimension is 67.5 inches for Tables 1 A -9A and 78.5 inches for Tables 113-913. 4. Provide 2 in. clear between roof and rail 5. End cantilever span (max) = 0.40 x maximum span from above tables 6. No rail splices in end spans 7. No rail splices in middle 1/3 of interior spans 8. Single simple span(s). Spans listed in the tables above may be multiplied by 1.08 for continuous rails of 3 or more spans. Our analysis assumes that the rails, including the connections and associated hardware, are installed in a workmanlike manner in accordance with the "IronRidge Roof Mount Installation Manual" by IronRidge and generally accepted standards of construction practice. Additional information is available at the IronRidge web site, IronRidge.com. Verification of PV Module capacity to support the loads associated with the given array shall be the responsibility of the Contractor or Owner and not IronRidge or Starling Madison Lofquist. The adequacy of the supporting roof framing is to be determined by others. Please feel flee. to contact me at your convenience if you have any questions. Respectfully yours, Tres Warner, P.E. Taggart, Vice President Products Subject: IronRidge F1ashFoot Dear Sir: December 18, 2014 page 1 of 11 This letter is a supplement to the standard letter for the IronRidge Roof Flush Mounting System to address the requirements for use with the IronRidge F1ashFoot. The IronRidge FlashFoot comprises an aluminum block and flashing plate. An L -Foot base is attached using a 5/16" lag screw with a 3 inch minimum embedment into a wood substrate. The wood substrate for the tests consisted of 1/2" CDX plywood over a 2x6 SPF #2 rafter with a specific gravity of 0.42. A full detail can be seen on the attached drawings. The testing data provided shows that the critical failure occurs in one of two ways, pullout of the lag screw from the base material or the shear failure of the L -Foot. Maximum allowable values for these failure conditions were derived using a safety factor of 3.0 on the lowest ultimate load provided by the testing. The maximum allowable uplift reaction of 717 lbs and the maximum allowable downslope (lateral) reaction of 341 lbs are based on the tested criteria. The allowable loads used to develop the tables below have been increased from the tested values above to reflect installation into a wood substrate with specific gravity of 0.50. The increase was determined using the ANSI/AF&PA NDS -2010 National Design Specification (NDS) for Wood Construction adjustment factor of 1 / 1-(0.50-G) where G is the tested specific gravity. Therefore, the maximum allowable uplift reaction is 779 lbs and the maximum allowable downslope (lateral) reaction is 370 lbs. The maximum allowable spacing of the F1ashFoot for common load cases due to wind and snow are shown in Tables 1-9 below. Starling Madison Lofquist, Inc. Taggart IronRidge Flashing Notes — Tabulated values are based on the following criteria: 1. Building mean roof height = 30 ft 2. Risk Category = I 3. Roof Slope = 7 to 27 degrees 4. Solar panel long dimension = 78.5 in 5. Minimum specific gravity of wood rafter = 0.50 6. ASCE 7-10 December 18, 2014 Page 11 of 1 l Our analysis assumes that the connections and associated hardware are installed in a workmanlike manner in accordance with the "IronRidge Roof Mount Installation Manual" by IronRidge and generally accepted standards of construction practice. It is the responsibility of the contractor to verify that the quality of the roof framing meets the minimum properties used in the tests.
