Dear Mr. Henehan:
Per your request Gelinas Structural Engineering LLC(GSE)went to the above site on 11.21.14. The
purpose of this trip was to perform a walk thru with yourself and review the framing for the recent addition.
The following are the results of our observations:
Discussion:
1. Generally the Town of North Andover requires a Professional Sealed Letter Report for Structural
Observations of the"LVL framing only"
2. Silverwatch Architects AIA performed the framing plans for the addition and remains the Design
Professional of Record for Framing on this project.
3. However,after observations on site you and Gelinas Structural decided on the following changes:
a. At rear wall studs platform framed with no platform, i.e.,at"open to above"area,add/scab
one 1-3/4 x 5-1/2 LVL to studs 16"o.c. to make studs continuous floor plate to roof plate
b. Valley in small rear roof dormers,one 2x10 SPF looked lite. Office review today indicates
attached beam calculation, scab one 1-3/4 x 9 '/z or 9 '/4"LVL to each valley
c. Same area Ridge beam, single 2x10 SPF is adequate, attached beam calculation verifies this
d. Interior rooms at second floor, client desires to raise existing ceiling for cathedral look:
i. Use minimum one 2x8@ 16"o..c. to act as the collar tie and the ceiling joist,location
is approximately half height roof to top wall plate existing
ii. All Rafters clip to LVL's/wall plates with Simpson H2.5A
Executive Summary:
1. Silverwatch Architects AIA performed the framing plans for the addition and remains the Design
Professional of Record for Framing on this project.
2. These two additions are required to meet the Structural Requirements of the IRC 2009 as amended by
the Massachusetts Residential Code 8th Edition Addendum:
a. At small dormer framing valleys add/scab one LVL to existing , scab to be 1-3/4 x 9-1/4"

b. At rear wall studs platform framed with no platform, i.e.,at"open to above"area,add/scab
one 1-3/4 x 5-1/2 LVL to studs 16"o.c. to make studs contin lions floor plate to roof plate
3. Note , ridge beam single WO ok as is at small rear dormers 11A of r
