Attach sketches or "before" photographs if these will help others visualize it. I will be creating a new pair of signs for Sharpners Pond Field. Currently, one of the signs is completely missing and the other is in poor condition with overgrown brush and branches all around it. I plan to make all new signs for the entrance as well as clear the area and make it look much nicer. Also, cleaning up the parking lot and other parts of the field will help with the aesthetics. (I would like to know if the town would be a good option to be the beneficiary of this project or if I should take this to the Booster Club or NASA?) Tell how your project will be helpful to the beneficiary. Why is it needed? Sharpners Pond Field is way out in the boonies, being already hard to find, having a sign you can only see from one direction makes it even more challenging. will be fixing that problem and cleaning up the entrance the rest of the field in hopes to turn around the field's reputation as a dump and give North Andover a field to be proud of. When do you plan to begin work on the project? February 2012 How long do you think it will take to complete? Early May 2012 Giving Leadership Approximately how many people will be needed to help on your project? 6 Scouts Where will you recruit them (unit members, friends, neighbors, family, others)? Explain: I will recruit 6 Scouts from my own troop (Troop 87) to help with the more "hands on" parts of my project. And of course, my family has offered to lend a helping hand wherever they can. What do you think will be most difficult about leading them? Personally, I have been to 5 youth leadership meetings, I have had the role Patrol Leader and Senior Patrol Leader. I am very confident with adaptability as a leader and I do not predict having many troubles with leading the scouts and if there is, that I can handle it. Materials (Materials are things that become part of the finished project, such as lumber, nails, and paint.) What types of materials, if any, will you need? You do not yet need a detailed list of exact quantities, but you must show you have a reasonable idea of what is required. Bricks(100), Wood Posts(2-4), 2 Flat pieces of wood(180 x 90 cm.), Mulch, Soil/dirt, 8 shrubs/plants, screws(x), sonotubes(4), plaque, Supplies (Supplies are things you use up, such as masking tape, tarps, and garbage bags.) What kinds of supplies, if any, will you need? You do not yet need a detailed list or exact quantities, but you must show you have a reasonable idea of what is required. Garbage bags, pizza/soda for all the volunteers, gallon of water(for the sonotubes), 8 Eagle Scout Service Project Proposal Tools What kinds of tools, if any, will you need? Hammer, Shovel, Bullet Beam Balance, hedge clippers, small saw, wheelbarrow, wrench, power drill, pick axe, hatchet, gloves, goggles, Permits and Permissions (Note that property owners normally secure permits) Will you need to secure permissions or permits (for example, building permits)? Who will obtain them? How much will they cost? How long will it take to secure them? I plan to meet with the DPW as well as the Conservation Department to determine if I need any permits for my project. This is mainly due to the fact that I will have to dig about 4ft. into the ground to keep the sign post secure. I also do not know if there is any limit to the sign's height. 1 will have to make sure the design for the sign itself is okay with the Booster Club/NASA and will have to meet with them to go over this. (any other suggestions of permissions I may need would be helpful) Preliminary Cost Estimate (You do not need exact costs. Reviewers will just want to see if you can reasonably expect to raise enough money to cover an initial estimate of expenses) (Enter your estimated expenses) Fundraising Explain where you will get the money for total costs indicated below, left. Items cost I plan to ask the town's Booster Club for a small donation to cover the funds I will need to complete this project. If I do need more after this, I will ask for donations from other Sports organizations that use the field and my family is willing to chip in for any other small expenses. Materials 100 Supplies 50 Tools 0 Other* 0 Total costs: 150 'Such costs as food, water, gasoline, parking, permits, equipment rental, sales tax, etc. Project Phases Think of your project in terms of phases and list what they might be. The first might be to complete your final plan. Others might include fundraising, preparation, execution, and reporting. You may have as many phases as you want, but it is not necessary to become overly complicated. 1. Planning and designs 2, Approvals 3,Gathering materials needed 4. Recruiting Scouts 5. Clearinq/levelinq the Area and the 1 st clean-up g,Construction of the Signs and Bases 7, Planting of Shrubs in Spring and the 2nd clean-up Logistics (A Tour Plan has also been called a "Tour Permit." Check with your council service center to determine if one is required.) How will you handle transportation of materials, supplies, tools, and helpers? Will you need a Tour Plan? All the materials, tools, and supplies will be brought to my house and then to Sharpners Field via myself driving with them. I live just down the street from the field so I can manage all of that. I will also recruit any of the scout dads who are willing, as well as my own to help transport the scouts down to the field. Eagle Scout Service Project Proposal, continued Safety Issues (The Guide to Safe Scouting is an important resource in considering safety issues) Describe the hazards and safety concerns you and your helpers should be aware of as this project is conducted. Before getting started, I will instruct all of the scouts on proper safety guidelines to follow. Everyone will be required to stay alert at all times and wear correct safety attire(goggles, gloves, etc.). Also, only older scouts (15+) will be allowed to use the power tools. Further Planning (You do not have to list every step, but it must be enough to show you have a reasonable idea of how to complete a final plan.) List some action steps you will take to complete a final plan. For example, "Complete a more detailed set of drawings." I will be designing the new sign on the computer and then it will be printed and laminated onto the wood (180 x 90 cm.) My father will be helping me with this step. I will then recruit 6 scouts to help me with clearing out the area for the signs. This will include leveling the ground and clearing the vegetation. While this is happening, some scouts will help with a clean-up of the entire grounds(fields, parking lot, etc.) After leveling the area, the brick base will be constructed around where the posts will be. The bricks will be stacked 5 high and about 20 bricks around. The bricks will not be cemented together. The posts will be dug into the ground about 4ft. and have sonotubes around the posts to ensure long-term endurance. The sonotubes will prevent rotting and anything else from destroying the part of the posts underground. Once the posts are securely standing, the sign will be screwed on. Within the bricks, soil will fill it in with a top layer of mulch. However, the mulch will be placed down in the early spring. This is when I will recall some scouts to help with this and planting shrubs around the base of the sign. Also, I will have a scout clean-up of the rest of the fields in the spring(picking up trash, etc.). Thus, completing my project. Candidate's Promise (Signed before approvals below are granted) On my honor as a Scout, I have read this entire workbook, including the "Message to Scouts and Parents or Guardians" on page 21. 1 promise to be the leader of this project, and to do my best to carry it out for the maximum benefit to the religious institution, school, or community I have chosen as beneficiary.
