Marino DATE: December 11, 1990 RE: Radon Testing Sorry not to have informed you of the latest results of the long term radon test prior to now. The results were gratifying and well within the limits- set forth in my letter of June 14 1989 (copy enclosed). For your information, I have enclosed a copy of the latest test results. If you have any question, please feel free to contact me. FAM/acb TO: Faculty, Students, Administrative Staff and Service Employees FROM: Frank A. Marino RE: Radon DATE: June 14, 1989 On Wednesday, March 8, 1989, the Advanced Radon Detection Company installed approximately 225 Niton two day radon detectors throughout Brooks School. Each detector was exposed for 48 hours and was picked up for analysis on Friday, March 10, 1989. The testing was conducted under "worst case" conditions; i.e. , during the winter and when the School was unoccupied and the buildings closed tight. The findings even under adverse conditions proved to be quite gratifying. Out of 225 tests only 13 locations had modestly elevated readings and of the 13 elevated readings there was only one reading that is located in an area frequented by students. In keeping with EPA recommended guidelines, ones average exposure to radon should be less than 4 pCi/l (in general what that means is that in a 24 hour period if one is exposed to various elevations of radon the summation of the number of hours one is exposed to the various elevations of exposure divided by 24) . For example, if your general living area has a radon intensity of 2.2 pCi/1 and your basement has a radon intensity of 8.8 pCi/l and you respectively occupy said locations 20 hours and 4 hours each your average exposure would be 20 x 2.2 + 4 x 8.8 divided by 24 which would equal 3.3 pCi/1 which is well within the EPAP gne uideliof 4 Ci/1. With the above information in hand you can readily evaluate the following 13 radon readings that were elevated: Original Follow-up Original Follow-up Readings Readings Readings Readings Building Basement Basement Living Area Living Area Peabody House 4.4 --- 1.6, 1.8,2.3 --- Hettinger House East Center Apt. 5.1 --- less than 1.0 --- Hettinger House West 6.8 11,15 1.2,2.2 --- Thompson House 8.8 4.9,11 5.0 2.2 Dearborn House 5.6 3.3 1.3 --- Steven's Property 9.1 2.5,4.1 1.5 ---
