OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS LIGHTING YOUR STOVE Caution: The first (5) consecutive fires built in your stove should be small , and the stove should be allowed to cool completely between each firing. This is required to temper the cast iron doors and grates in the stove. Also, your stove will give off an odor and smoke the first time it is lit. Therefore , we recommend if possible lighting the first fire in your stove outdoors. This would require the use of a stove pipe elbow in the stove with an extension. If your stove is lit indoors you may want to open some windows until the stove is cured. BURNING WOOD 1 . Open air intakes and manual damper to full opening. 2. Place crumpled up single sheets of newspaper in stove. About 4 full sheets is sufficient. 3 . Place kindling on top of paper and ignite paper. Do not use flamable liquids to start your fire. This is very dangerous . 4 . Close doors and allow kindling to ignite. ' 5 . When kindling is burning, add at least three logs, `7 putting in two side by side with a space between them and add the third log so it crosses over the first two. Remember "One log won' t burn, two logs burn poorly, three logs make a good fire. " 6 . Close doors. After the logs have begun to burn close manual damper about half way and adjust air intakes for the desired rate of burn. Fill stove with logs as desired. BURNING COAL ` We recommend using anthracite coal , chesnut size. 1. Follow steps 1 thru 4 above using 15 to 20 pieces of kindling about 1" in diameter. Lay the kindling on the paper in a cross hatch pattern, that is , some pieces laid side to side and some front to back. y „ ` s t! w n J r S _ ` 4IORK 41 it E d.
