At 41, he's a rookie police officer
By Meir Rinde
Staff Writer
When John Farrow was a 15-year-old high school student in
North Andover,he used to tell friend Michael Saltman that
he wanted someday to become a police officer.
Saltman laughed at the idea, but it kept coming up as they
grew into their 20s and remained friends, when they went out
for beers, even while they worked together as orderlies at
Lawrence General Hospital.
Saltman went to work in
rte finance and started a
family. Farrow became a
medical attendant, getting
married at age 24 and then
going through a difficult,
youthful divorce before
r. ' drifting into alcoholism
during the 1980s. Farrow

he was too old to become a police

to become one in New Hampshire. but another obstacle stood
in the way of his dream of becoming a police officer-- he was
too old to join a force in Massachusetts, where communities
either ban hiring officers older than 32 or frown on it. He has
jumped that hurdle, however, and is now a police officer in
Newfields,N.H. (near Exeter), where age is not a barrier to the

fulfillment of his dreams.
Farrow, who lives in Andover, was awarded his certification
from the New Hampshire State Police Academy in Concord
on Saturday, a month shy of his 42nd birthday -- well past the
age most people enter police work. He has been training and
working with the Newfields force, and taking law enforcement
classes for the last three months.
"Of course, I wish I had gone for this in my late or middle 20s,
but that's when the bad stuff happened," Farrow said. "It
obviously set my course back, in the medical field and in law
enforcement. It was a hurdle, and it took a little while to get
over, but I finally found my niche and my home.
"We all look back and if we could change certain things,we
would," he said. "That's just the course of life. Right now this
is where I feel I could fit in the best. At my age, I'm hoping
this is the career I'll be working on for the next 20 years."
Saltman said he supported old friend Farrow through the
good times and the bad, and now he's glad he did.
"There's going to be a lot of people around town going, 'What?
This guy?"' Saltman said. "I personally said to myself, 'It's not
going to happen.' Hey, he's 42 years old. But he did it. I'm
proud of the guy."
Farrow began seriously resurrecting his old hope of working
for a police department in 1998 when he served as a part-time
corrections officer for little pay and no benefits. In 2001 he
worked as a reserve police officer in Maine and last year he
was a court officer in Salem,N.H.
The Maine job confirmed for him that he wanted to be a cop,
despite being 39 years old at the time, he said. In Andover
and other Massachusetts communities that use the state civil
service process, only people 32 and younger or military
veterans 36 and younger may take the police and fire entrance
exams. In Massachusetts communities that are not subject to
those restrictions, Farrow said he found police departments
usually passed him over in favor of younger applicants.
"At 42, you don't get picked as a police officer," he said.
"Especially in Massachusetts, they're picking people in their
20s or late 20s. It's unheard of for someone who's 42."
Departments often argue that younger people are in better
shape physically and say they do not want to invest in training
for older officers who will soon retire or leave. When

Andover Town Meeting adopted the age limits two years ago,
the main goal was to avoid straining the town's pension fund, a
union official said.
New Hampshire has no such age rules, however. The police
academy in Concord regularly sees trainees who are Farrow's
age, said Keith H. Lohmann, acting director of the state's
Police Standards and Training Council.
"It's not all that unusual anymore," Lohmann said. "The
average age is probably around 26 or 27, but we typically have
a couple older people in every class of 60 students. Fifty years
old is not unheard of, and our oldest was 64.
"They're a whole lot more mature, generally," he said. "They
tend to have the wisdom that comes with the tincture of time."
Farrow says he knows he's more mature than he was in his
20s, when his contact with North Andover police was not
always ideal. While he never got in serious trouble, he did
"have some dealings" with officers in the 1980s,he said.
"I remember a lieutenant talked to my parents. I remember
him saying, 'We know he's got a problem,"' Farrow said. "The
police were very understanding. They said, 'He's going to get
arrested for something.'
I
"But in the back of my mind, it was like, I'd like to do that," he
said of police work. "I think they impressed me. They were all
good guys about the situation they encountered with me."
Through his 20s and 30s, Farrow worked in hospitals rather
than pursuing law enforcement, but even as a medical
attendant he was trying to help others as the North Andover
police tried to help him, he said.
"I saw a lot of damage, a lot of deaths," he said. "I did all the
CPR, all the code victims, I was in charge at the morgue. My
position wasn't the most pleasant. This is the connection for
me, because both jobs are high-paced with a quick focus and
quick reaction."
That is, when Farrow was up to reacting quickly.
"I keep reflecting back on the '80s. The thing to do was
drinking," he said. "It was the norm. That's just what we did.
We drank on weeknights and weekends, and that's the way it
was. But it caught up to me. There was a point in my drinking
career where the jobs came to a halt, so to speak."
