RE: Title V third review for Christian Way Extension, Lot 4
Dear Sandra,
I have reviewed the revised design plan(which revises the number of bedrooms from 4
to 5)for the above project with revision date of 01 May 2000. Apparently the house has
been built and the septic system installed as per plans with revision date of October 21,
1999. The proposal is to increase the width of the system from 24 feet to 26 feet by
adding an additional 1-foot of stone to each edge of the system. An additional I-foot of
septic sand is proposed to be placed on both sides of the leaching bed to ensure that top
and subsoil are removed and replaced with sand in the 5 foot area around the system. I
find that this revision adequately addresses the regulations.
I would like to make the following observation. The approved design plan with
revision date of October 21, 1999 was designed for 4 bedrooms yet had a proposed
leaching bed that was adequate for 547 GPD(3 GPD short of being adequate for 5
bedrooms). To make up for this shortage of 3 GPD the proposal is to disturb the system
and lawn to add more area to the leaching bed. The original design had an LTAR of 0.6
gaVSF because TH 98-4-01 had a receiving layer texture of sandy loam which is a Class
II soil. If the receiving layer texture of TH 98-04-01 had been a loamy sand, then the
soil would have been a Class I soil in which case the LTAR would have been 0.74
gaVSF and the existing system would have been adequate for 674 GPD or 6 bedrooms.
I note that TP 984-02 had a receiving layer of loamy sand, and that the older test pits
done in 1987 and 1993 would indicate a receiving layer of sand or loamy sand. Thus
the existing leaching bed is almost adequate for 5 bedrooms because the existing
leaching bed capacity for Class II soils is lacking only 3 GPD, and the soils are almost
Class 1 soils. However, to follow the letter of the law, the existing system is not
PORT adequate for 5 bedrooms and therefore I believe the proposed revised system will

today. It has been determined that the existing system 'as previously installed meets the
requirements for a five bedroom dwelling.

septic system at this location,dated June 15,2000. (See attached) If you recall,I requested an

Department as-built of the septic system be submitted to the Health Department. To date this office has

It is imperative that we receive the as-built so that this file can be closed. As it
Public Health presently stands,the file has approved plans for the expansion of this septic system to
Nurse accommodate an 1 I-room home. Your letter indicates that the existing system in ground is
(978)688-9543 larger than initially thought and it could handle the increased flow as is,therefore,there would
be no work needed to expand this system. These determinations must be shown on an as-

Dear Sandra,
I have reviewed the revised design plan for the above project with revision date of 11
December 1998. I find all my original concerns have been addressed except for the
following. As per 310 CMR 15.221(2)there must be a 6" stone base beneath the d-box
and the septic tank. The plans correctly have added"310 CMR 15.221(2)" and have
added a six inch base beneath the d-box and septic tank on the plans, but they still call
for"gravel" instead of"stone". The word"gravel' should be deleted and the word
"stone" put in its place. (If this minor change is made, I do not need to review this plan
again.)
