NELSON, DIRECTOR August 11, 1988 TO: Interested parties FROM: Health Department Status Report RE: Black Soot Monday morning August 8, 1988 120 Main Street North Andover, Massachusetts 0 i84 (61 7) 685-4775 Several residents of French Farm in North Andover reported large soot particles which had settled in their houses over the night of 8/7/88. Many more complaints came from Ward Hill in Haverhill, the Marston's Street area of Lawrence and part of Methuen. Samples from a relatively dense deposit in Haverhill were analyzed and found to be carbon particles with an oily residue, as would be caused by starting up an oil burner. On Sunday afternoon a large cloud of black smoke was reported over the general area of the neighborhoods mentioned above, but it's origin was never located. This appears to be an incident unrelated to the G.L.S.D. or Signal Resco Plant and was probably the result of an oil burner or incinerator being started up, possibly for repairs or maintain- ance. No toxic metals were found in the sample. D.E.Q.E. analysis results will be out next week but this appears to have posed no health hazard. KAREN H.P.
