PURPOSE: A site visit was made to the referenced project to review the subgrade col diticos _,id
provide technical recommendations for backfilling.
The project site is located in a residential area of North Andover, MA. It is cur uitdertandin;� tli:tt
the site ,vas formerly occupied by a residential structure. The residence was razed irorri iae 1",
which is presently vacant. The former basement foundation located towards the fl-cnt of th.! s
been left open. The hole is approximately 5 fl in depth measutin,r about 35 ft ley 45 t at the hale v,idh

The on-sll:e soils generally consist of a brown, fine to medium sand with s�:cie
Occasional cobbles and boulders are embedded in the soils. A sample ofthe on-site soli

results of the gradation test indicate the upwards of 35% of the sample by weir;ht consists of silt m�d.

Based on the foregoing, we provide the following comments/recommendations:
• The on-site soils should be suitable for structural backfill provided they arc ;5?G,:; c; in

• Prior to use, any stoncs greater than 8 inches in size should be removed from- iii.
• The fill should be placed in maximum 12 inch loose lifts and compacted with several rat,ses
(at least 4-6 passes) with a minimum 2-ton vibratory roller. "Che lift thickn;:ss should be
reduced to 8 inches if a plate compactor is used for soil densification. Field densit t!.,s c
should be perfonned on the compacted lifts by a. UTS Soil Technician to verify that spec 'aIe,a
compaction is being attained.

Summary: The writer arrived at the above site at 7 : 00 AM and met with
Philip Lemire from Lemire Construction. The purpose of this visit was
to perform a soil inspection. The. existing building area was ex-
cavated to natural firm material prior to the writer' s arrival . The
area was backfilled in one foot thick lifts and each lift was com-
pacted with five passes of a vibratory roller. The material consists
of fine sand and silt, clay with little gravel, from on site . Eight
field density tests were performed according to ASTM D2922 using a
Troxler density gauge . Test results exceeded 950-o of ASTM D1557
modified. These observations were related to Mr. Lemire prior to
departure .
