Re : NORTH ANDOVER
Board of Health Additions to
North Andover, Massachusetts Sewage Disposal
Facilities of
Gentlemen: North Andover Infirmary
The Department of Public Health on
receipt of a communication from your Board has
caused an examination to be made by one of its
engineers relative to additions to the sewage dis-
posal facilities of the North Andover Infirmary and
has considered the information submitted .
The sewage disposal facilities of the
Infirmary originally consisted of a cesspool, the
effluent of which discharged to a tributary of Lake
Coehic.hewick, the source of water supply of the town
of North Andover. A septic tank, said to have a
capacity of approximately 1000 gallons, was added at a
later date and the effluent discharged to the cesspool .
Plans on file in your office indicate that
the connection between the septic tank and the cess-
pool has been broken and that the effluent now discharges
to a distribution box and ultimately to a leaching field,
24 feet x 24 feet in area . No information is available
relative to the quality of the soil for the subsurface
disposal of settled sewage .
At the time of the examination the new works
were operating satisfactorily . The Department recom-
mends that examinations be made from time to time to
determine the adequacy of these works in order that
additional facilities may be provided if there is any
indication of the failure of the present works .
Respectfully,

Miss Mary Sheridan R. N.
Health Agent
Board of Health
North Andover, Mass.
Dear Miss Sheridan:
An examination was made as requested of the existing sewage disposal
system at the North Andover Infirmary. The existing leaching fief:
that
was constructed four years ago is, too small to handle the load and the
consequence is that it is overflowing. It is recommended that an additional
leaching field be installed adjacent to the existing one employing an addi-
tional 160 feet of leaching lines. This can be taken off from the existing
distribution boi. It is also recommended that the septic tank and existing
,4esspool be pumped out, in order to prevent any sludge from going directly
into the new lines.
The area adjacent to the existing leaching field will have to be built
hp approximately two feet with gravel prior to the installation of new C
lines.
Very truly yours,

Mrs. Lilian Deardon, Agent
Board of Public Welfare
No. A d., Mass.
Dear Ars. Deardon:
The Dppto made its annual inspection of the N. And. Infirmary
in accordance with Chapter 121, Section 7 on April 22, 1952
and on that date. there were 4 redidence with a capicity for 12 persons.
This report has bean delayed because it was understood that the
Infirmary•was to be closed.
At the time of inspection the house and other buildings were very
much much in need of paint and repairs both inside ztdide and outside.
The home was clean, remarkably so when the floors, walls and ceilings were
in such poor condition that cleaning was difficylt. The plumbing was in
poor condition and needed to be modernized with new equipment. It i
recommended that the toilet facility in the upstairs corridor be removed.
The living quarters for the redidents were in need of repair and new
furnishings.
It is recommended that the /Mass. Dept. of Public Safety be asked to
inspect the premise$: that the local fire inspections be mote frequent,
and wire inspection is especially necessary in old buildings, 'and that all
reco, mendations be carried out. The Mass. Dept. of Public Health should
be asked to inspect the sewerage system. The menus for the day were good,
well balanced, and with ,tariety. The Matron is a good cook and the residents
appeared to enjoy their dinner.

Medical care is gigen- as needed. It is recommended t at all reidents
have, at least annually, complete physical examinations including x-rays,
that all new admissions have suc examinations, and that medical records
be kept of such recommended t re`*___ the has not already
been removed to a nursing home, that such arrangements be made as she
appeared to need more nursing care than available.
The Dept* would commend the good housekeeping and kindly care given
to the residents.
Thank you for your cooperation and courtesy to our inspector, Mrs.
Katheiine E. Doyle, R.'N.

Health Agent
Board of Health
North Andover, Mass.
Dear Miss Sheridan:
An examination was made as requested of the existing sewage
disposal system at the North Andover Infirmary. A similar examin-
ation was made on Idlay 7, 1960 and this letter reveals the same
report as submitted at that time. The existing leaching field
that was •constructed seven years ago is too small to handle the
load and the consequence is that it is overflowing. It is recom-
mended that an additional leaching field be installed adjacent
to the existing one employing an additional 160 feet of leaching
lines. This can be taken off from the existing distribution box.
It is also recommended that the septic tank and existing sesspool
be pumped out, in order to prevent any sledge from going directly
into the new lines.
The area adjacent to the existing leaching field will have to
be built up approximately two feet with gravel prior to the instal-
lation of new lines.
