Upon a motion made by John Pallone and 2°d by Walter F. Soule the Board voted to GRANT a Special Permit to allow to enclose an existing deck and convert into a sunroom on a pre-existing non-conforming structure on a non- conforming lot. Voting in favor: WJS/WFS/EM/JP. 10.4 Variances and Appeals The Zoning Board of Appeals shall have power upon appeal to grant variances from the terms of this Zoning Bylaw where the Board finds that owing to circumstances relating to soil conditions,shape,or topography of the land or structure and especially affecting such land or structures but not affecting generally the zoning district in general,a literal enforcement of the provisions ofthis bylaw will involve substantial hardship,financial or otherwise,to the petitioner or applicant,and that desirable relief may be granted without substantially detriment to the public good and without nullifying or substantially derogating from the intent or purpose of this Bylaw. This change is necessary to help meet consumer demand for communications services.and the needs of new companies providing local telephone service. The addition of these new codes will necessitate a change in dialing patterns, and the introductory phase of that dialing change begins September 15. Under this plan—which is being made in connection with a ruling by the Massachusetts Department of Telecommunications and Energy—one new area code will be assigned to each of the existing area code geographic boundaries in Eastern Massachusetts. Area code 857 will be added to 617, 339 will be added to 781, 774 will be added to 508 and 351 will be added to 978. This method will avoid the need for current Eastern Massachusetts customers to change their telephone numbers. After May 1, 2001, customers who order new service, add an additional line or move within Eastern Massachusetts may be assigned a new code. 9781351 413 6171857 7811339 5081774 Here are some important facts and dates about the area code changes: Things that won'tThinQs that won't Change: • Existing telephone numbers are not changing. • Local calling areas are not changing. A local call is still a local call. A toll call is still a toll call. • 9-1-1 emergency service will not change. • Dialing within 413 remains the same. 1 . September 6, 2000 Page 2 Things that will change: • Beginning April 2, 2001, all local calls within Eastern Massachusetts must be dialed using ten-digits(area code+ seven digit phone number) Key dates: • A 6-month permissive dialing period begins September 15,2000. All local calls can be dialed with the seven-digit number or with the ten-digit number(area code+ seven-digit phone number) during this period. • Mandatory ten-digit dialing for all local calls begins April 2,2001. Important things to remember: • Check any telephone equipment or service that dials or stores telephone numbers and reprogram it to dial ten digits for local calls. • Get used to local dialing changes early. Start using ten-digit dialing for all local calls on September 15, 2000. • Questions can be directed to a toll free customer assistance line, 1-877-554-3685, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Verizon will make the introduction of the new area codes as smooth as possible for all customers.
