PART 1 —GENERAL
1.1 DESCRIPTION
A. This addendum shall supplement, amend and become part of the bid documents. Bid
Documents are the Contract Documents, Drawings and Specifications, for the North
Andover Central Fire Station dated August 28, 2014. All bids and the construction contract
shall be based on these modifications.
1.2 PROCEDURES
A. The attention of bidders submitting proposals for the above subject project is called to the
following addendum to the specifications and drawings. The items set forth herein, whether
of omission, addition, substitution, or clarifications are all to be included in and form a part
of the proposal submitted.
B. THE NUMBER OF THIS ADDENDUM (3) MUST BE ENTERED IN THE APPROPRIATE
SPACE "B" PROVIDED AFTER THE WORD "NUMBERS" OF THE CONTRACT FORM
ENTITLED "FORM FOR GENERAL BID," AND IN SPACE "B" OF THE "FORM FOR SUB -
BID."
1.3 RELATED WORK
A. All work shall comply with requirements specified for similar work unless otherwise
described.
1.4 THIS ADDENDUM CONTAINS
A. Direction to General Contractors submitting a bid.
B. Filed Sub -Bid - BID TABULATIONS
PART 2 — DIRECTION TO GENERAL CONTRACTORS
2.1 DIVISION 14 — CONVEYING SYSTEMS
A. Division 14, Section 14 22 00 COMPACT TRACTION ELEVATOR, shall become part of the
General Contractor's scope of work.
2.2. DIVISION 23
A. Division 23 00 00, HEATING VENTILATING AND AIR CONDITIONING, will be re -bid.
Each General Contractor submitting a bid shall carry $565,000.00 in their bid for Division 23
00 00. The general contract amount shall be adjusted via change order after the Re -Bid
results have been submitted subsequent to awarding the General Contractor the bid for
construction.
1. Division 23 00 00, HEATING VENTILATING AND AIR CONDITIONING, Re -Bid
documents will be available via BidDocs ONLINE after eight o'clock AM 8 October 2014
at www.BIDDocsonline.com (may be viewed electronically and hardcopy requested) or
from Nashoba Blue, Inc.
2. Division 23 00 00, HEATING VENTILATING AND AIR CONDITIONING, will be
received until two o'clock PM on 22 October 2014 electronically submitted on-line and
publicly opened on-line, forthwith.

A. Bidder Question: Are the drain manhole structures (DMH) water quality structures
(indicated on legend on sheet C5.0) or standard drain manholes as detailed on sheet C6.0?
There is a significant price difference.
Response: The DMH structures shown on C5.0 are the standard manhole structures
detailed on Sheet 6.0.
B. Bidder Question: Please confirm that video-taping all sewer/water/drain systems is a
requirement for this project.
Response: Water lines shall be pressure tested per Specification Sections 33 11 16.
Sewer and Drain lines shall be low pressure air tested and vacuum tested per Specification
Section 33 05 00.
C. Bidder Question: Drawing C7.0 has a detail for "Grass Ring Pavers". The plan view doesn't
indicate any requirement for this work. Please confirm there is no requirement for grass ring
pavers.
Response: The Grass Ring Pavers detail on Sheet C7.0 was deleted in Addendum No. 2,
Item 4.1, 3.
D. Bidder Question: The bottom of Infiltration Area No. 3 is at elev. 159.25. The system
requires approx. 6.5ft in height (8" peastone, 18" crushed stone, 4'-2" h Diffusers and 3"
peastone on top) plus 16" of pavement and gravel. Based on these requirements and the
proposed finish grade of 164, the bottom of the infiltration system must be at elev. 156.17.
Please confirm if this is correct.
Response: Elevation 159.25 is the B.O.G., or Bottom of Galleys, which is a minimum of
4.75 feet below the proposed ground surface. The elevations listed on Sheet C5.0 are
correct.
E. Bidder Question: Drawing C5.0 and E0.3 indicate 2 concrete light pole bases located within
Infiltration system #3. Based on detail 6/E0.4, the concrete bases require an in ground
depth of 6ft and will penetrate the diffusers. Please review and advise.
Response: The light poles have been relocated to outside of the Infiltration structure #3.
Refer to revised SPI. 1, issued as part of this Addendum, which references revisions to
C2.0, C4.0, C5.0 and E0.3.
F. Bidder Question: Please provide a detail(s) for the site concrete pads (Dumpster and
hydrant) showing reinforcing and thickness of concrete.
Response. Refer to revised SPI. 1, issued as part of this Addendum, details on Sheet C7.0
and revision to Specification Section 35 05 00, Item 6 in this Addendum.
G. Bidder Question: Drawing C3.0 requires the removal of unsuitable soils below the footprint
of the building, under pavement and other structures and refers to spec section 0310 00 -
Earthwork. There is only 4 boring and 3 test pits provided which is insufficient information to
accurately determine the volume of unsuitable soils to be removed and replaced.
Furthermore, spec section 31 10 00-1.3 para C.2 implies that the Engineer will determine
the depth of soil to be removed and para C.3 refers to a unit rate. Given that there is no unit
rate schedule and the quantity is unknown, our suggestion is to provide a quantity of

unsuitable soils that must be carried in the base bid with a unit cost for adjustments. Please
consider this method.
Response: All bidders shall carry in their base bid the removal of 2,935 cubic yards,
removal to an approximate depth of 2.13' below existing grade, of unsuitable soils in the
area designated on Sheet C3.0.
H. Bidder Question: The bottom of Infiltration Area No. 2 is at elev. 158.35, The system
requires approx. 6.5ft in height (8" peastone, 18" crushed stone, 4'-2" h Diffusers and 3"
peastone on top) plus 16" of pavement and gravel. This puts the finish grade at approx.
elev. 164.85. There are finish grades in this area below elev. 164. Please review and
advise.
Response: Elevation 158.35 is the B. 0. G., or Bottom of Galleys, which is a minimum of
5.25 feet below the proposed ground surface. The elevations listed on Sheet C5.0 are
correct.
I. Bidder Question: Drawing C3.0 indicates removal of the existing pavement to the southerly
property line. Drawing C5.0 indicates a 12ft wide path from the property line to the
apparatus apron. Does this require new asphalt pavement and subbase?
Response: Yes. Refer to SKC-4 for clarification for removal scope, bituminous and base,
as well as new base and new bituminous pavement scope.
J. Drawing SP1.1 indicates CCB on each side of the apparatus apron and drawing C2.0
indicates VGC. Are we to assume drawing C2.0 is correct since there is an alternate for a
concrete apron and VGC is more applicable if the alternate is accepted?
Response: Curbing on south and north edges of Apparatus apron shall be VGC. Refer to
revised SPI. 1, included as part of this Addendum.
K. Bidder Question: The quantity and size of steel bollards at the transformer and generator
concrete pads vary from the civil and electrical sheets.
Response: Refer to revised SPI. 1, issued as part of this Addendum, for layout of
galvanized concrete filled bollards at equipment and dumpster concrete pads. SPI. 1
bollard layout at pads shall supersede bollard layout on civil and electrical sheets.
L. Bidder Question: The size per detail on sheet C8.0 is 8" dia x 8'-0" h and on sheet E0.4 the
size is 6" dia x 9'-0". Please review and advise which quantity and sizes are required for
this project.
Response: Bollards shall be 6 inch diameter and 8 feet high. (Reference revisions to sheet
C2., Part 4, 4. 1, 1, A.)
M. Bidder Question: Is Cl 56 DI water pipe required in North Andover?
Response: Yes, class 56 ductile iron water pipe to be used per Sheet C4.0.

0. Bidder Question: Drawing C5.0 calls out drain pipe as SDR 17. Is that correct or should it
be SDR 35 or HDPE?
Response: SDR -17 is thick walled HDPE Pipe and is required by the Town of North
Andover for drain pipes.
P. Bidder Question: Drawing C3.0 states "remove existing unsuitable.... new building." To
what elevation is existing material to be removed? To what distance from the foundation is
this removal to occur?
Response: All bidders shall carry in their base bid the removal of 2,935 cubic yards,
removal to an approximate depth of 2.13' below existing grade, of unsuitable soils in the
area designated on Sheet C3.0. The building foundation is within the designated area
shown on Sheet C3.0.
Q. Is the concrete encasement for electrical ductbanks required below the slab on grade within

Response: Concrete encasement of ductbanks is not required below the building slab.

R. Wood spec. Par 2.1 E calls for grilles (louvers?) in doors 209 & 220 and then in Par 3.1
mentions "aluminum grilles". Door manufacturers provide either matching wood louvers or
metal louvers (not aluminum). Should we exclude the louvers as by others?
Responses: Section 08 14 16, 2. 1, H, 4 states louvers for non -label doors shall be same
species as face finish. Louvers to be clear finish maple. Refer to revisions to Sections 08
14 16 & 08 90 00 below. (Part 3, 3. 1, A, 4 & 5 below)
S. Wood spec Par 2.1 H1 specifies all doors to be painted but then mentions to match Section
06200 for natural wood finish which is maple. Door schedule indicates "clear" finish. Are
we to exclude the reference to painted doors?
Response: Wood veneer doors to receive "clear" finish as noted in Door Schedule on
Sheet A7.1.
T. Many doors are shown in openings with either fire -rated partition types or are shown with
the "dotted lines" per the Ration Partition Legend but are not indicated on the door schedule
to be rated (ex, 128, 118A, 107, 127, etc). Should we qualify that we are rating doors per
the door schedule only?

overhead door openings?
Response: Yes. Both are required at all overhead door openings as per Section 05 50 00

"I. 7ADA AND MAAB COMPLIANCE
A. Special attention is to be given to compliance with Americans with
Disabilities Act (ADA) and the requirements of the Massachusetts
Architectural Access Board (MAAB).
1. Slopes: All walkways as defined by the section 22.1 of 521 CMR shall
be graded to a maximum 4.5%. The cross pitch (perpendicular to
travel) for all walkways and paths shall be constructed at 1.5%. The
slope of all ramps and side slopes on handicap curb cuts as defined by
section 2 1. 1 of 521 CMR shall be constructed at 7% maximum. Ramps
as defined in section 24.1 of 521 CMR shall be constructed to a
maximum slope of 7%.
2. The Contractor is to assume that all sidewalk grades shall be
verified/checked with a 2 -foot long electronic "Smart Level".
3. A 5'-0" minimum level (1.5% pitch) area shall be provided at all
entrances to buildings. Puddling or water at the entrances will not be
allowed.
4. The above requirements shall supercede the grades shown on the
plans. If these requirements cannot be met with the grades shown on
the plans, the Architect shall be notified immediately for direction."

`D. Steel Reinforcement:
1. Welded wire fabric reinforcement shall conform to the applicable
requirements of ASTM A 185. Fabric reinforcement shall be furnished
in flat sheets. Fabric reinforcement in rolls will not be permitted.
E. Portland Cement Concrete
1. Portland cement concrete for pavements and slabs shall be air -
entrained type with a maximum water -cement ratio of 5.0 conforming to
ACI 316R. Minimum compressive strengths at 28 days shall be as
follows: Flexural strength with third point loading - 650 psi;
compressive strength - 4000 psi.
a. Concrete shall be air -entrained type, conforming to ASTM C 94. Air
content by volume shall be 6% ± I%, and shall be tested in
accordance with ASTM C 231.
b. Concrete slump shall be no less than 2 in. nor greater than 4 in.,
determined in accordance with ASTM C 143.
c. Cement shall be Portland cement, conforming to ASTM C 150,
Type I or 11. Only one color of cement, all of the same
manufacturer, shall be used for the work. Type 111 cement shall be
used only with the prior approval of the Architect.
d. Fine and coarse aggregates shall conform to ASTM C 33.
e. Concrete shall contain a water reducing agent to minimize cement
and water content of the concrete mix at the specified slump. Water
reducing agent shall conform to ASTM C 494.
f. No calcium chloride or admixtures containing calcium chloride shall
be added to the concrete. No admixtures other than those specified
shall be used in the concrete without the specific written permission

F. Curing Materials
1. Curing shall be by moist curing or by use of curing compound.
2. Curing paper shall be nonstaining, fiber reinforced laminated kraft
bituminous product conforming to ASTM C 171. Four mil polyethylene
sheeting may be substituted for curing paper.
3. Curing compound shall be a resin -base, white pigmented compound
conforming to ASTM C 309, Type 2.
G. Expansion Joints
1. Unless otherwise indicated on the Drawings, expansion joints shall be
located 30 ft. o.c., maximum.
2. Expansion joint filler shall be preformed, nonbituminous type joint filler
conforming to ASTM D 1752, Type 11, similar to Sealtight Cork
Expansion Joint Filler, manufactured by W.R. Meadows, Inc., Elgin, IL
60120, or approved equal.
a. Premolded filler shall be one piece for the full depth and width of
the joint leaving a sealant recess as indicated.
b. Use of multiple pieces of lesser dimensions to make up required
depth and width of joint will not be permitted.
c. Except as otherwise noted on the Drawings, joint filler shall be 1/2
in. thick.
3. Expansion joint shall receive joint backer rod and shall be sealed with
joint sealant under the work of Section 07160, Dampproofing.
H. Control Joints
1. Control joints indicated to be tooled shall be made by scoring concrete
slab after finishing of slab, with scoring tool which will cut into slab at
least 1 in., but in no case less than 25% of slab depth.
I. Construction Joints
1. Transverse construction joints shall be placed whenever placing of
concrete is suspended for more than 30 minutes.
a. Butt joint with dowels or thickened edge joint shall be used if
construction joints occurs at location of control joint.
b. Keyed joints with tie bars shall be used if the joint occurs at any
other location.
J. Grout
1. Grout shall be mixed in the proportions of one part Portland cement to
two parts sand, by volume. Only sufficient water shall be used to
enable grout to barely hold its shape when squeezed into a ball in the
hand. Sand for grout shall be "Fine Aggregate", conforming to ASTM C
33.
2. Nonshrink grout shall be pre -mixed non -shrinking, high strength grout.
Compressive strength in 28 days shall be 5, 000 psi minimum, but in no
case less than the specified strength of the adjacent concrete.
Manufacturer shall provide evidence that the material meets the
requirements of the COE CRDC 621 (558). Grout permanently
exposed to view shall be nonoxidizing; metallic grout may be used in
other locations.

produce the desired slump. When conditions develop that required
addition of water to produce the desired slump, permission of the
Architect must be obtained. The concrete shall be transported from the
mixer to its place of deposit by a method that will prevent segregation
or loss of material.
j. Work shall not be performed during rainy weather or when temperature
is less than 40 F. (4.4 C).
k. Adjacent work, etc., shall be protected from stain and damage during
entire operation. Damaged and stained areas shall be replaced or
repaired to equal their original conditions.
1. Existing concrete, earth, and other water -permeable material against
which new concrete is to be placed shall thoroughly damp when
concrete is placed. There shall be no free water on surface.
m. Concrete which has set or partially set before placing shall not be
employed. Re -tempering of concrete will not be permitted.
n. Concrete shall be thoroughly spaded and tamped to secure a solid and
homogeneous mass, thoroughly worked around reinforcement and into
corners of forms.
o. When joining fresh concrete to concrete which has attained full set,
latter shall be cleaned of foreign matter, and mortar scum and laitance
shall be removed by chipping and washing. Clean, roughened base
surface shall be saturated with water, but shall have no free water on
surface. A coat of 1:1 cement -sand grout, approx. 1/8 in. thick, shall be
well scrubbed into thoroughly dampened concrete base. New concrete

shall be placed immediately, before grout has dried or set."
j. 3.2, F: Insert the following:
"5. Concrete Finishing:
a. Concrete flatwork surfaces shall be screeded off and finished true to
line and grade, and free of hollows and bumps. Surface shall be dense,
smooth, and at exact level and slope required.
b. Finished concrete surface for subbases shall be woodfloated to a
slightly rough surface. Surface shall not deviate more than 1/4 in. in 10
ft.
c. Finished concrete surface for concrete walks and pads shall be wood -
floated and steel troweled to a smooth surface. Surface shall not
deviate more than 1/8 in. in 10 ft.
d. Unless otherwise indicated, horizontal surfaces of concrete surfaces
which will be exposed shall be given a light broomed finish, with
direction of grooves in concrete surface perpendicular to length of
concrete band, slab, or pad. After concrete has set sufficiently to
prevent coarse aggregate from being torn from surface, but before it
has completely set, brooms shall be drawn across it to produce a
pattern of small parallel grooves. Broomed surface shall be uniform,
with no smooth, unduly rough or porous spots, or other irregularities.
Coarse aggregate shall not be dislodged by brooming operation.
e. Immediately following finishing operations, arises at edges and both
sides of expansion joints shall be rounded to a 1/4 in. radius. Control
joints to be tooled shall be scored into slab surface with scoring tool.
Adjacent edges of control joint shall at same time be finished to a 1/4
in. radius.
f. Where finishing is performed before end of curing period, concrete
shall not be permitted to dry out, and shall be kept continuously moist
from time of placing until end of curing period, or until curing membrane
is applied.
6. Concrete Curing:
a. It is essential that concrete be kept continuously damp from time of
placement until end of specified curing period. It is equally essential
that water not be added to surface during floating and troweling
operations, and not earlier than 24 hours after concrete placement.
Between finishing operations surface shall be protected from rapid
drying by a covering of waterproofing paper. Surface shall be damp
when the covering is placed over it, and shall be kept damp by means
of a fog spray of water, applied as often as necessary to prevent
drying, but not sooner than 24 hours after placing concrete. None of the
water so applied shall be troweled or floated into surface.
b. Concrete surfaces shall be cured by completely covering with curing
paper or application of a curing compound.
c. Concrete cured using waterproof paper shall be completely covered
with paper with seams lapped and sealed with tape. Concrete surface
shall not be allowed to become moistened between 24 and 36 hours
after placing concrete. During curing period surface shall be checked
frequently, and sprayed with water as often as necessary to prevent
drying, but not earlier than 24 hours after placing concrete.
d. If concrete is cured with a curing compound, compound shall be
applied at a rate of 200 sq. ft. per gallon, in two applications
perpendicular to each other.
e. Curing period shall be seven days minimum.

7. Concrete Expansion Joints:
a. Expansion joints shall be 1/2 in. wide. Expansion joint shall be formed
in the concrete to required width with preformed joint filler in place.
Joint filler shall extend the full depth of the slab. Joint filler shall extend
the full length of the expansion joint.
b. For conc. pavements and pads, depth of joint filler shall be as required
to form a 1-1/4 in. deep sealant and backer rod recess below finished
concrete surface.
8. Control Joints:
a. Unless otherwise indicated, control joints to be tooled shall be scored
into the concrete slab every 10 ft. o.c. maximum. Joint shall be made
after concrete is finished and when the surface is stiff enough to
support the weight of workmen without damage to the slab, but before
slab has achieved its final set.
9. Cold Weather Concreting:
a. Materials for concrete shall be heated when concrete is mixed, placed,
or cured when the mean daily temperature is below 40 F. or is
excepted to fall to below 40 F. within 72 hours, and the concrete after
placing shall be protected by covering, heat, or both.
b. Details of handling and protecting of concrete during freezing weather
shall be subject to the approval and direction of the Architect.
Procedures shall be in accordance with provisions of ACI 306R.
10. Hot Weather Concreting:
a. Concrete just placed shall be protected from the direct rays of the sun
and the forms and reinforcement just prior to placing shall be sprinkled
with cold water. Every effort shall be made to minimize delays which
will result in excessive mixing of the concrete after arrival on the job.
b. During periods of excessively hot weather (95 F, or above), ingredients
in the concrete shall be cooled insofar as possible and cold mxing
water shall be used to maintain the temperature of the concrete at
permissible levels all in accordance with the provisions of ACI 305. Any
concrete with a temperature above 95 F, when ready for placement will
not be acceptable, and will be rejected.
c. Temperature records shall be maintained throughout the period of hot
weather giving air temperature, general weather conditions (calm,
windy, clear, cloudy, etc.) and relative humidity. Records shall include
checks on temperature of concrete as delivered and after placing in
forms. Data should be correlated with the progress of the work so that
conditions surrounding the construction of any part of the structure can
be ascertained.
k. 3.3, A: Insert the following:
"2. Concrete surfaces shall be protected from traffic or damage until surfaces have
hardened sufficiently. If necessary 1/2 in. thick plywood sheets shall be used to
protect the exposed surface."
