HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-09-27 Board of Health Minutes (2) pipelines: the gathering lines from the wellheads to the processing plants; inter/intrastate transmission lines; distribution lines. Based on Mr.McCarthy's experience,he believes the problem occurred in the distribution system. In the United States,there are 2.2 million miles of distribution pipelines. 97% of the pipes are plastic; however,some of the pipes in Massachusetts are iron and (late back 150 years. Those old lines need replacement. There is a monitoring system to watch for pressure spikes. Other safety mechanisms used are leak detectors,odorizers, pressure regulators and pressure relief valves. All homeowners should know how to shut off gas,oil,electricity and water. If you smell gas, evacuate. Please go to the town website and view the Selectman meeting to follow current information regarding the gas issue. Brian LaGrasse discussed the role of the Health Department. Initially,the Health Department was involved with first responders,evacuations and the opening of shelters. The next stage was to assist the local restaurants. The Health Department canvased each restaurant to discover who was affected and how. Brian LaGrasse,Michele Grant and Meghan Baldwin completed the inspections.This process helps with insurance claims. The Health Department worked with the recovery center located at the First and Main Shopping Center,by calling in behavior health specialists to assist with for stress and anxiety. At this time, Brian LaGrasse has been reaching out to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to discuss concerns with housing and housing codes. Resident Kevin O'Donnell of 14 Sargent Street discusses the(]angers of hot plates and space heaters. Elderly and children are the most vulnerable.
