The band once again has experienced another suc-
cessful year under the leadership of director, Mr.
Z, Frank Savory and president, Louis Lipomi. The half-
time shows they presented were executed with great
d precision and along with the popular songs that were
played, provided much entertainment to those in the
C stands. Besides the halftime shows, the Band was in-

volved in parades, the Christmas assembly, and visited -
Danvers State Hospital where they performed for the
patients. The band also entertained the aged with
Christmas Carols at the nursing homes in North
Andover. In our opinion, the quality of the band was
unparallelled in the Cape Ann League, it never seemed --
to stop improving. Hey, we don't mess around!

What is the purpose of a cheerleader? It's to generate school spirit and this
year the cheerleaders of North Andover High did just that. Under the leader-
ship of Captain Marilyn Dill and Co-captain Nina Furnari, along with the
coaching of their advisor Mrs. Robert Gesing, the many afternoons of seem-
ingly endless practices paid off. Many new cheers from a week at cheering
camp at Providence, Rhode Island were introduced and performed with skill
and accuracy in both motions and mounts. The cheerleaders achieved their final
goal when the spirit came to life at the rallies and continued to prevail through-
out the season.

With the mention of the 1971 football season, vivid images
come to mind. The countdown of the last 20 seconds of the .
Ipswich game. Joe Cardoza driving for his 10 touchdowns.
Bill Bushnell shooting in to tackle the opponent in his own
backfield. The Methuen quarterback's face when all he saw l
was a tide of black and scarlet surging toward him. Phil Miller
tromping down a North Reading back for a safety. The clear
voice of Dave Lynch calling audibles at the line. The Law-
rence Eagle Tribune naming our team "Team of the Year"
and Mr. Robert Roche "Coach of the Year!" The annual foot-
ball awards and rallies, and of course "Victory" when the
NAHS football team closed out the season with a fantastic
7-1-1 record.

The 1971 Cross Country team, coached by Mr. Stephen Buco, raced to a near perfect
11-1 record in its debut in the Cape Ann League. Leading the eight-man pack were
Steve Taylor and co-captain, John Pierog who finished one-two in all but two of the
league meets. Ned Smith, Bill Stevens and co-captain Ted Maker were the backbone of
the team consistently finishing in the top ten. They received strong support from letter-
men Mike Danahy, Dave LeMauk, and Ed Riemitis. The boys' displacements helped the
team wrap up its adversaries in all the meets except against Masconomet. Sickness and
injuries hurt the small team but it still had the distinction of placing three runners in
the top ten position at the league meet.

Many new happenings, improvements and changes
came about this year through the Student Council.
The 1971-72 year saw a new student bulletin board, . `a r • ,,,
many familiar faces in the Christmas parade, full
length mirrors in the girls' room, raising $500 for
the A. F. S., assemblies, record hops, dances, and
the annual tag day, canned food and scholarship drives.
With the strong leadership of Rick Turner, Cheryl ,. t
Spinelli and Nancy Fleischmann and the assistance
from Mr. Stephen Buco the adviser, all of this was s

Planning for Ecology Club Picnic
ECOLOGY
CLUB
The NAHS Ecology Club had two main goals this
year. They wished to educate people about ecologi-
cal problems and to try to get every student involved
in ecology. Several students visited Kittredge School
to make the younger children aware of the world in
which they live. "Non-polluting-but-fun" projects
were held, such as ecological picnics, bike trips and ...... .
hikes. On these excursions, students learned helpful
information applicable to everyday life. The Ecology ir
Club tried to develop environmentally-conscious ,F
=,
students.

CLUB .
The film-making club is a new club at '
NAHS composed of students who are inter-
ested in photography and movie-making.
The club's objective is to make a movie to
be shown to the student body. The members
have many good ideas that they hope will
result in an "Oscar-winning production." w °
The faculty advisors are Mr. Simmons and i
Mrs. Goodnow.

SQUIRE
As annually expected, the SQUIRE came out eight times dur-
ing the school year. With the 1971-72 year came a few new ad-
ditions and improvements; putting appeal into the advertise-
ments, taking over the Class Poll and more pictures. Overall the
SQUIRE did a great job keeping its readers informed at the
community and school level and by also venturing into the na-
tional news scene.

BASKETBALL _ . - -
After many successful years in the
Merrimack Valley League the Knights
entered their first season as a member of
the Cape Ann Conference. The team
opened with a heart breaking loss to t
archrival Methuen in double overtime.
The N. A. players then bounced back by
defeating Methuen in a rematch. ' "
From there on in it was smooth sail-
ing as the Knights rolled up 18 straight __ »
victories, and captured the Cape Ann _
League Championship. Defense was once i
g
again the key to Mr. Licare's team, as k
the Knights held their opponents to '
about 42 points a game. Outstanding t
performers during the year were Co-
captains Jay Enright and Ted Maker, as
well as Pete Phelan, Wayne Harper, and -
Andy Breen.
Once again the N. A. basketball team
continued its long tradition of qualifying ,•'
for the State Tournament. Congratula-

The 1972 Spring sports season brought success
once again to the softball team. Led by co-captains
Claudia Turner and Joan Proctor, the team hurled
quite a. few fast balls at the Cape Ann League. Much _• ;,
of the credit was due to the underclassmen who made
up the majority of the team and who will hopefully
continue their successful ways next year.

however, the Society became more involved with com-

_ A number of members were also involved in a program
of tutoring underclassmen. Since service is an important

DRAMATIC CLUB
What can you say about a group of kids in a
j
Dramatic Club? That when they get together, ' w :
they succeed in putting on some really great
shows? That in working together, on stage and
off stage, there is created a real "Brotherhood
of Man"? This year was the second year that
the Dramatic Club, in conjunction with the t, f N.
Music Department, has put on a musical. Other
activities during the year were a ChristmasY.
show, theatre parties and a Christmasparty.
P
Working both back stage and on stage gives
invaluable dramatic and social experience. What
can you say about a group of kids in a Dramatic
Club? That's show business! r

Once again the chorus has brought fa 4
music and entertainment into the halls ';
of NAHS. Under the leadership of
Miss Healy, the chorus performed at
the Christmas Assembly, Arts Festival, `
and an Exchange Concert with Marble-
head High School. Due to the increase
in its size, the chorus has been able to
sing all types of classical and popular '
music. This year's music students have
shown a great deal of talent as well as
determination.

year is the yearbook staff. Led by
Editor Nina Furnari, staff members
spent many long afternoons, even-

remember in 1971-72. When it's all
over there is a great feeling of ac-

Something new was added to the springtime scene at North Andover
High. The new event was a field day devised by the gym teachers that
included competition among all four classes in various sports events.
Class spirit and willingness to participate were very evident. The class
of 1972 turned out to be the victors with the class of 1973 in second
place. Everyone had a fantastic time and is eagerly looking forward
to the next field day.

An ounce
of prevention.
Pollution.
You can't fight it until you find it.
Sometimes it's as easy as analyzing a beaker of
water. Other times a complete ecological study
is required.
.. Right now, on rivers and lakes, along coastlines,
JR Raytheon scientists are using a variety of techniques
4' to determine precisely where pollution exists, or
will exist.
Once it's found, automatic monitoring systems
and equipment from Raytheon provide continual
analysis of water quality. r
Helping people get the drop on water pollution is
just one of the ways Raytheon technology is working
for better living today.
