Duffy, Jr. Martha Salisbury Maria Galvagna Mesinger, Eva Hamori Raymond Vivenzio Treasurer E. William Hansen To the Citizens of North Andover: The Trustees of the Stevens Memorial Library herewith present their 102nd Report, commencing with the report from the Library Director, Mary Rose Quinn. Report of the Library Director: To the Trustees of the Stevens Memorial Library, I hereby submit the 102nd Report of the Director which is for the period January 1, 2010 —December 31, 2010. Numbers of Note in 2010: • 60% of North Andover residents are current and active library users. • The Library averaged 3,273 visitors a week to the Library. • Children's and Adult Reference answered over 28,000 reference questions, an increase of 9% over last year. • Public computers are used an average of 914 times a week. • An average of 15 laptop users a day accessed our upgraded WIFI services. • As a member of the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium and the Massachusetts Library System, the Library shared 37,498 of its collections with the residents and libraries of other communities and borrowed 33,411, an increase of 9% over the prior year. • 3,867 adults, teens, and children attended programs held at the Library. • The meeting rooms were used an average 25 times each week by outside organizations • 212,970 books and other materials were borrowed from the Library. • The Library represents 1.16% of the Town Budget(tax dollars), under $30 a year per North Andover resident, less than the price of one hard cover book. Building Challenges and Library Technology Successes: The Library's greatest challenge in 2010 was the failure of the HVAC system just prior to the summer heat. Thank you to everyone who attended the special November Town Meeting to support replacing the HVAC system. Thanks also to the Staff and Public who endured gracefully and patiently the difficult indoor climate throughout the summer months. More Library spaces were adapted to suit our patrons' research needs, reading habits, viewing and listening tastes, and technology requirements. Thanks to the Friends, the Library was able to create the Children's Book Awards Room. This year saw the improvements to shelving in the Reading Room and the Reference Area. Thanks also go to the Friends for more shelving displays for our popular paperback collections, music CDs, DVDs, and Quick Reads. The Library continued its technology transformation this year to support the ever changing needs of our library patrons. In 2010, the Library concentrated on enhancing wireless access throughout the building and expanding our public computer networks in the Reference, Young Adult, and Children's Rooms. The expansion of our public computing capabilities was made possible, in large measure, to the funding provided through a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The Gates' grant funding was matched by The Friends of the Library. In addition, the Library expanded broadband access which made possible the enhanced wireless service for patrons. The Library installed a second patron self-check system because the one in the Children's Room had been so well-received. The Library offers the numerous online resources available through the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium, the Massachusetts Library System, and the statewide network. All of our electronic resources are accessible through the Library website at http://www.stevensmemlib.org. The Library provides 24 hours a day, seven days a week access to a wide variety of newspapers and magazines in text and digital formats, encyclopedias, test preparation programs, genealogy resources, history and social studies materials, current events, and curriculum related databases. The Library expanded its local online database offerings this year to include a language learning resource `BYKI" (Before You Know It), online classes available through"Universal Class", full text business and technology books online from "Safari Books" and two readers advisory services called "Next Reads" and "Book Letters". Programs: The Library offered a number of programs throughout the year, ranging from story hours and elementary school book clubs to regular evening and weekday films. Special programs included live theater performances of Othello and As You Like It by the Rebel Shakespeare Company, the Greg Maicheck pastels painting workshop, and programs, workshops, projects and displays by North Andover Poet Laureate, Gayle Heney. The programming highlight of the year was our"Summer at the Stevens". Our"Go Green" Summer Reading Program was a huge success even with the environmental challenges the Library experienced. For the second year, the Summer Reading Program was offered to children, teen, and adult patrons. Congratulations to all of North Andover's summer readers. We are very grateful for the work of numerous presenters who offered programs throughout this past year that entertained, educated, and inspired our audiences. The Library thanks our wonderful Friends volunteers who are an integral partner in all of our programming activities throughout the year, especially the Summer Reading Program. Our other summer program partners include the Massachusetts Library System's statewide reading program specialists, the Board of Library Commissioners, and the Boston Bruins. We are also very grateful to the North Andover Arts Council for their financial assistance in support of several of our special events and many of our summer programs. Partnerships: The Library continued to strengthen its partnership with the School administration, educators, students, and their parents. We focused our efforts this year on sharing resources, offering programs and activities, and enhancing curriculum related collections and online content. Early in the year, the Library worked in conjunction with students and faculty at Merrimack College to offer business book discussion groups and to develop marketing project strategies promoting online services. In 2010, we again supported our community members in need, offering Food for Fines during the holiday season. All foods were donated to the local food pantry. Library Staff: Thank you to a dedicated and caring Library Staff for providing quality Library services to our Patrons. Without their efforts, none of the above programs and services would have been possible. We would also like to thank the Friends, volunteers, and the many patrons and supporters who made 2010 both rewarding and memorable. The Stevens Memorial Library looks forward with enthusiasm to 2011 as we build on and enhance our programs, services and collections for the residents of North Andover. Respectfully submitted, Mary Rose Quinn, Library Director Report of the Board of Trustees: The Trustees extend their deepest appreciation to Martha Salisbury, who retired from this Board in November after many years of dedicated service to the Library and the Town. Martha's insights concerning the community and commitment to providing forward-looking Library services to its residents will be truly missed. The Board of Trustees would like to offer their profound thanks to the dedicated Library Staff who continue to provide the public with exceptional Library services, in spite of another year of difficult economic times which continues to have a dramatic impact on library usage. The Board also extends its appreciation to the many volunteers for their contributions on behalf of the Library. The behind-the-scenes efforts of our committed volunteers gave staff more time to provide direct services to the Community. The Board extends its special thanks to the Friends of the Stevens Memorial Library whose numerous hours of volunteer service generate the funds that allow us to enhance library services beyond our budget limits. This year the Friends outdid themselves. In addition to providing museum passes, fund programs, and purchasing the DVD collections, the Friends matched the Gates Foundation Grant for an Early Literacy computer, purchased display walls and shelving, and funded the creation of the Children's Book Awards Room. The Board continues to oversee the investment and expenditure of Endowed Funds and Special Gifts. Proceeds from donors purchase books, furnishings, and equipment and are traditionally used to enhance the building and grounds, and the services, programs, collections and activities of the Library.
