Model Number: Polylok PL-122 Effluent Filter
Dear Mr.Plander:
The Department received your letter, dated November 11, 1998, requesting approval of the
above referenced effluent filter. The Polylok PL-122 Effluent Filter is designed to be installed in the
effluent tee of the septic tank to filter out solids and prevent clogging of the distribution piping. The
Department has completed its review of your submittal. The Department has made no determination
as to the extent, if any, that the Polylok PL-122 Effluent Filter will improve the performance of an
on-site sewage disposal system. The Department approves the use of Polylok PL-122 Effluent Filter
in accordance with 310 CMR 15.289(4),Effluent Tee Filters,subject to the following conditions:
I. An access manhole with a minimum diameter of 20 inches shall be located over the effluent
tee of the septic tank, in which a Polylok PL-122 Effluent Filter is to be installed, in
accordance with 310 CMR 15.221(3). That manhole must be extended to grade and the
cover secured to prevent unauthorized access in accordance with 310 CMR 15.228. In
addition, the manhole cover must clearly note (either painted with non-degradable paint or
other permanent, identifiable markings) the system is equipped with a Polylok PL-122
Effluent Filter.
2. Polylok, Inc. shall, in any contract for distribution or sale of the Polylok PL-122 Effluent
Filter, require that the distributor or seller provide the purchaser of the filter with a copy
of this letter prior to any sale of the filter. Additionally, prior to sale or distribution of the
filter, any seller or distributor of the Polylok PL-122 Effluent Filter shall provide the
purchaser of the filter with a copy of this letter.
3. Prior to installation in an existing system, the system owner shall obtain approval for the
proposed modification of the system from the local approving authority. If the system is a
failed, failing, or nonconforming system, the system shall be upgraded in accordance with
310 CMR 15.404.

4. In accordance with 310 CMR 15.227(6),the Polylok PL-122 Effluent Filter must be installed
to extend below the flow line as follows:

5 feet 19 inches
6 feet 24 inches
7 feet 29 inches
8 feet 34 inches
5. The owner of a system in which a Polylok PL-122 Effluent Filter is installed shall have a
septage hauler, licensed by the local Board of Health in accordance with G.L.c. I I I s. 31 A
and 310 CMR 15.502, clean the filter at least once each year and the owner shall report that
event,in writing,to the local Board of Health within 30 days of the date of the cleaning.
6. Any system in which the filter is installed must comply with the provisions of 310 CMR
15.000.
7. This approval does not constitute approval for use of the filter in lieu of a properly sized
septic tank, including,but not limited to,the requirements for a properly sized septic tank for
greywater when used in conjunction with a composting toilet, as described in 310 CMR
15.289(3)(a)(2).
