1 ro-Chem Dry Chemical Fire Suppression,System over Fueling Areas
The Attendant 11 Gasoline Station Fire Super ssion System,Is a fire control system designed to aid and enable occupants to,evacuate parked vehicles
subjected to fire resulting from spilled fuel in the protected area of gasoline service stations. A secondary purpose is to extinguish small spill fires in
the protected area. The system Is not designed to extinguish deep, seated fires, flammable liquid firesin depth, fires originating within wrles,or
fires outside the protected area. The system provides automatic or,manual activation. Upon actuation, the system discharges,a pre-determined
arnourit of ABC type Dry Chemical Agent onto the protected area. At this site.,system activation al:so shuts off power to,the fuel, pumps and island
dispensers.
The Pro-ongineQmd cystarn has been designed and te,Aed:to the September 29, i9ga revision of UL-1254 Standard for frig-Engineered Dry,
,Cheimicall Eginguishingr Lstem,Uni"and is Listed by Underwriters Laboratories for main island protection and end-of-Isliand protection.
0 2e r Ition
A modular concept of protection is used.An EIGHT nozzle or FOUR nozzle group,(depending on size of cylinder),called a cluster',protects a specific
hazard module. Sets of clusters are located to protect adjacent'hazard module to cover the, entire hazard area., The nozzles are aimed in
accordance with the manufacturer's Installation specifications for either main, island or end of island'area coverage. The hazard area at this location
Is outlined by the PLB(Positive Limiting Barrier)grooves approx heat elyTEN feet from the dispensing Island in all directions.Dry Chernical Agent,
distributed through the piping system to the nozzles,,Is discharged onto the fuelling area.
The,system Is actuated either automatically or manually. Rate compensated thermal'detectors designed to operate at a factory preset i d
temperature,(2250'F per Mass State Fire Marshal Guidelines)are, located directly above the, dispensing Islands with no greater than 15"spacing.
Upon sensing preset conditions.,these detectors send an automatic electrical signal to a control head(ECH3)at the pneumatic actuation cylinder.,
The system can also be operated manually by pulling a release that sends an,electrical signal to the control head or In the case of power loss, the
system can be actuated manually by turning a lever on the control)head. There Is no additio)nal sequence for operation, once an automatic or
manual signal is sent to the Controll-lead,the system actuates. W tv""(4&/kill41-4
At the point of actuation, the nitrogen dispensed from the pneumatic actuation cylinder will activate a Pressure Switch on route to the DrV
Chemical Cylinders,at the fuel island. The Pressure Switch is mounted beside the pneumatic actuation cylinder. "dais Pressure Switch will activate
the building fire alarm(if building fire alarm exists)
the,Control Head and Pneumatic Actuation Cylinder make up the pneumatic actuation system. The pneumatic cylindier(s)'11s connected by copper
tubing to several Dry Chemical Cylinders,at the fuel island. Upon receiving an automatic or manual signal to actuate, the control head signals the
dry nitrogen containing Pneumatic Actuation Cylinder to discharge which,in turn, signals the Dry Chemical,Cylinders to discharge,The ECH3 Control
Head is connected to a,Solenoid Monitor that provides supervision of the actuation and'detection circuits. The solenoid monitor provides dry
contacts for output signal,In,the event of system actuation, power loss,or trouble with detection wiring that Is used to shut down power to the fuel
pumps and also to the fuel dispensers.
Dedicated stored-pressure cylinders are located at,the fuel dispensing area. Upon pneumatic signal from the actuation systerri..these cylinders
:dis harge ABC type Dry Chemical Agent through a piping distribution system to nozzle clusters located per the pre-engineered design to cover the,
site specific hazard area.Typically, clusters of EIGHT or FOUR,nozzles each are connected to each chemical agent cylinder. Each cylinder discharges
a fixed amount of dry chernical'and'must be recharged before it can be put back, into service.

IN CASE OF FIRE
Fires can potentially start anywhere in the hazard area due to carelessness involving soils and ignition sources. to case
of fire, it Is important that you folly understand the operation of your fire suppression system.
FIRS Evacuate all personnel and customers from the fire area.
SECOND: If your fire control system has not already automatically activated, you may have to activate it manually
by pulling the handle on the manual pull station, or by twisting the handle in the direction of the arrow on
the head assembly located at the top of the system storage tank.
THIRD Call your local Fire Department.
LASTLY: Personnel trained in the proper operation of hand portable extinguishers may stand by if means of easy
exit are available.
When the fire has been extinguished, call your local authorised P ro- hern distributor to recharge ge the system. finder n .
circumstances should refueling operations be attempted before qualified personnel re-instate the integrity of your
gasoline station fire suppression system.
MAINTENANCE
The ATTENDANT or ATTENDANT Il Gasoline Station Fire Suppression System is a sophisticated fire suppression
system, involving intricate rnechar'ical components. To ensure the proper operation of the system, regular inspection and
maintenance by an authorised, trained Pyro- hero distributor must be performed on a semi-annual basis,or after an
system discharge due to either a fire or otherwise. To contact your local Pyro-Chem distributor, call Pro-Chem at
o) 526-1079 or 7 732-3465.
This system is made up of parts listed by Underwriters laboratories Inc. with limitations contained in the detailed
installation manual. The authorised distributor most be consulted after the system is discharged or whenever changes
are planned for the system and/or area of protection.
In addition to the regularly scheduled maintenance, as an owner you may assist in assuring stern integrity b
1. Visually inspecting the cylinder"s pressure gauge to make sure the system pressure is within its proper range.
2. Visually inspecting the detection system to make sure no mechanical charge has occurred,
. Inspecting all nozzles, keeping them free from dirt and debris and assuring that all nozzle covers are in place.
4. Assuring that the manual pull station is easily accessible and all personnel are made aware of its location and
purpose.
. Assuring that good housekeeping practices have been maintained to elim rate potential fr hazards.
. Plastic ties for retainer pins are intact on pull station(s) and control he d s ,
t this time, it is also good practice to visually Inspect all hand portable fire extinguishers to
verifygood working
condition.
MANAGEMENT
It makes good business sense for the owner/manager to take an interest in the following areas of his/her business
operation to ensure the best possible fire protection for the gasoline station;
1, Arrange for proper inspection and maintenance of the fire control system
(required every six months), as well a
hand portables.
. Eliminate all potentially combustible materials and arrange for their proper storage.
age.
3. Arrange for upgrading the fire suppression system if fuel station arrangement h
as changed.
4. Arrange for a continuing education program in the gasoline station fire suppression operation a newemployees
are added t the staff.
p
Remember, there truly exists a potential fire hazard within the hazard area of the gasoline station. Many gasoline
stations that have had fire never re-open for business, and many suffer severe financial loss due to lack of business
onfinulty. To help avoid this fate, remember, your Pyro-Chem gasoline station fire suppression system is a mechanical
device and, as such, requires periodic service by your authorized, trained Pyro-Chem distributor.
This owner's manual is not intended to serve as instructions for installation or service of the Pyro-Chum ATD-35175 or
ATD- l o BC systems, but rather to inform purchasers of this equipment as to their responsibilities in the
` proper usage maintenance of the system. op of the detailed manual outliningUnderwriters Laboratories Listing
of the
Pyro-Chen system is available upon request from an authorized Pyro-Chem distributor or directly from P ro-Cher.
THIS SYSTEM IS MADE UP of UNITS TESTED WITHIN LIMITATIONS CONTAINED ifl IN THE DETAILED
INSTALLATION MANUAL.AN AUTHORIZED SYSTEM DESIGNER MUST BE CONSULTED WHENEVER EVE CHANOES
ARE PLANNED ED FOR THE SYSTEM OR AREA of PROTECTION.AN AUTHORIZED INSTALLER CAR SYSTEM
