Sidewalk needed along busy stretch
Nov 17, 2016

To the Editor:
For the past four years since l moved to town, I have often heard my neighbors talk about the need
to install a quarter-of-a-mile stretch of sidewalk from the YMCA on Haverhill Street/route 133 to its
intersection with Route 114.
Route 133 is a state highway, and this very short distance spans the two towns -- Andover and
North Andover. Pedestrians are currently traveling in the gutter and terrain along 133 (to/from the
areas of C S and TD-Bank plazas)while some walkers just walk in the roadway. The lack of
sidewalks is a public safety hazard for drivers and pedestrians alike, with nightfall and youthful
textirg walkers exacerbating the situation
Tens of thousands of vehicles travel 133. There are ,o o-plus YMCA members. There are 25 - lus
abutting homeowners including Andover Gardens and Coachman's Ridge Condominiums,
Hundreds of pedestrians from both towns routinely walk this roadway,
With the beautiful, new YMCA expansion and the added amenity of Lawrence General Hospital
medical offices, there appears to be incremental foot traffic coming from the Merrimack k College area
as well e,g,, students carrying gym bags). As a concerned citizen and taxpayer, r would like to bring
increased public awareness to this growing safety concern, as its scope seems comparable to the
newly funded and installed Route 114 crosswalk.
I urge local public officials to evaluate the lack of route 133 sidewalks, even if it takes a fever years
worth of initiative for state approval and 'Installation to come to fruition. 1 encourage fellow citizens to
contact elected officials to voice their support of route 133 sidewalks.

Dear I Planning Committee,
n November 17, 2016, the Eagle Tribune published a "Letter to the Editor" regarding the need for
sidewalks on RT-133, up to its Intersection with T-11 . This very short distance spars the two towns--
Andover and North Andover. There are currently hundreds ofAndover residents within walking distance of
the Eaglewood Shopping plaza, yet, due to traffic concerns and lack of side ral s , the plaza remains
dangerously within our reach. Beyond just pedestrian and traffic safety, a change, could have positive
economic benefits for the mall.
I am not sure if a potential sidewalk(s) is in the scope of tonight's meeting agenda, but since the parties
seem relevant le planning hoard and property mgmt lwant-to take the opportunity to communicate this
outstanding issue once again.
This letter received very positive political response at the time.
