Sidewalk needed along busy stretch of 133/Haverhill Street

To the Editor:
For the past four years since I moved to town, I have often heard my neighbors talk about the need
to install ar quarter-of- -mile stretch of sidewalk from the YMCA on Haverhill Street/Route 133 to its
intersection with Route 114.
Route 133 is a state highway, and this very short distance spans the two towns Andover and
North Andover. Pedestrians are currently traveling in the gutter and terrain along 133 tt from the
areas of CVS and T -Bank plazas) while some walkers just walk in the roadway. The lack of
sidewalks is ar public safety hazard for drivers and pedestrians alike, with nightfall and youthful
to ting walkers exacerbating the situation.
Tens of thousands of vehicles travel 133. There are ,coo-plum YMCA members. There are 250-plus
abutting homeowners including Andover Gardens and Coachman"Coachman"s Midge Condominiums.
Hundreds of pedestrians from both towns routinely walk this roadway.
With the beautiful, new YMCA expansion and the added amenity of Lawrence General Hospital
medical offices, there appears to be incremental foot traffic corning from the Merrimack College area
as well e.g., students carrying gym bags). As a concerned citizen and taxpayer., I would like to bring
increased public awareness to this growing safety concern, as its scope seems comparable to the
newly funded and installed route 114 crosswalk.
i urge local public officials to evaluate the lack of Route 133 sidewalks even if it takes a few years
worth of initiative for state approval and installation to core to fruition. i encourage fellow citizens to
contact elected officials to voice their support of Route 133 sidewalks.
