The following description explains the basic theory of the program_ Hydrographs are generated by the system based on pertinent information of the watershed_ Two separate and distinct method- ologies may be utilized to create hydrographs. They may be generated by the system using either the Modified Rational Method or the Soil Conservation Service method. The Modified Rational Method computes the watershed discharge characteristics based on the unit hydrograph method with a peak flow determined by the rational method and a time to peak of ninety minutes plus the time of concentration to the design point in question. The Soil Conservation Service publication entitled "Urban Hydrology for Small Watersheds; technical release no. 55" . The results obtained through use of the rational method described above have proven realistic for small urbanized watershed, while the Soil Conser- vation Service method is generally more applicable to larger, less urbanized watersheds. THEORY OF HYDRAULIC ANALYSIS Page 2 The hydrographs generated are then easily lagged and combined by the program to simulate .actual physical condi- tions. The inflow hydrograph obtained by this procedure is then routed through a pond of given characheristics, the data used for each pond is printed before the results of the actual routing. The flood is routed by the incremental solutions of the equation: z' BIZ AT - `' az 6T -- S2 S, -- AS z z Inflow at times 1 & 2 Outflow at times 1 & 2 cJ S Storage at times 1 & 2 T TIME-2 - TIMEj (time interval) The following are the discharge equations used by the flood routing program: Definition of terms for the following equations: Q = Vl.ow rate; c.f.s.
