1942 was received together with a comparison of the 19/+3
Budget Figures.
The Treasurer's Report cf the fiscal year ending December 31,
1942 was received and accepted.
Notice dated January 1~, 194~, from the Division of Civil
Service, approves the increase of three dollars per week
for Hectcr Lefebvre, ~KXX~ Chauffeur. The present
auth6rization for his employment as Chauffeur to fill the
vacancy caused by the military leaw of Donald Thomson
expires April 30, 1943, we are advised in this letter,
A lettcr of resignation received from Richard ~eider, as
Pound Keeper, Constable ~nd auxiliary Policeman was re-
ceived. It was votO~ ~to ~held~- the matter of acceptance
of this resignation cver for two weeks, together with
his resignation as Superintendent ~f the Town ~nfirmar~..~

Januar~ 25,
The regular meeting of the Beard of Selectmen was. held this
date with all members present. The weekly bills were approved
for payment.
James Daw and Christopher Higginbetham, permanent.firemen came
before the Board to see if they would approve the issue of
uniforms to the. firemen.; ~They said they felt they should be
treated.Just thc same as the regular policemen.
Mr. Thomson said he didnt feel they were in the same class
with the policemen because they Rte not obliged to were their
uniforms at al2 time, as are the policemen.

Mr. Hi~inbottom said they had to wear them when they went with
~the ambulance and the suits were given very hard wear at these
times. They said ( Mr. Daw and Mr. Higginbottem) that they had
talked with their chief on this matter and he was in accord with
their request and he would ceme before the meeting for them if
it were necessary. Mr. Higginbottom said he f~lt the unifcrms
should be considered as part of their equipment a~d should be
furnished. He also ~aid that the department had purchased the
first coat and hat for them.
After further discussion of the matter, Mr. Thomson and Mr. Foster
together with Mr. Finneran expressed the opinion that this was ~a
ma~er Tor the'Board of Fire Engineers to decide. The men argued
that the Selectmen appointed the Engineersand they~felt the Board
ceuld take some action.
Mr. Thomson then said that if a bill came through for uniforms
he would approve it and Mr. Fester said he would ~o se too. The
matter was left this way.

collation of two pole lecatiens en Salem Turnpike was received
and approved. '~ Thong rant covering these peles was dated 12/22/24.
g ruling requested from Attorney C.J. Mahoney was received pertain-
ing te the placing of a question on the Ballet for the Town Meeting
in March with reference to the 70 hr. week law for permanen~ fire-
men. Mr. Mahoney rule~ that this matter would have ~e be inserted
in the warrant as an article and could not go oz the ballet.
'A.~letter received from Tax Commissioner, Henry P. Eeng, suggesting
that immediate steps be taken ~e see that Section 3SA of Chapter
41 is adopted in this municipality at the ~ewn meeting or by
law or in the tewn government was considered. This section relates
te the cellection of ~utstanding bills cf the town by the Tax
Cellecter. ~t was decided to insert an article in the warrant
~e see if the tewn wished to accept this section and have autstanding
bills collected in this way.
Mr. Joseph Flanagan, representing the New England Tel. & Tel. Ce.
came before the meeting infurther reference ~e the validation forms
for practically all of the peles owned by the Telephone Cempany
which have been pending for some time. These hearing~had net pre-
~iously been called because cf the tremendous amount of w~rk entailed.
~e advised that he would like te have some definite information as
te Just what the Board intended doing about them se that h~ could
make a report ~e his office. He said he had looked up the abettors
and it was Just a matter of mailing eu~ the notice of hearings. ~t
'was"suggested that Mrs. Regan do this work in her spare time and bill
the N.E. Tel. & Tel. for ~services. Mr. FlAnagan said he d~d not think
his company would b~ able to pay directly to an individual but w~uld
check the ma~terl Mr. Thomson said he did not think it was prcper the
B~ard should pay this extra meney out and then bill, He would rather
have the Telephone Cempany pay Mrs. Regan directly. The matter was
left this way; Mr. F!anagan to check further with his office.
~Mr~ Foster made a statement with reference to the resignatio~ cf the
Beard cf Selectmen as a Rationing Board. Seme time previously the Board
sent in a letter cf resignation because they were seeking reelection te
public office and they were told their resignation would be accepte~
in F~bruary. tr. Fester~ sai~ it was the ~uty of the Beard te appoint
a new panel te be approved by.~th~Civil Defense Committee which should
~be sen~ te Boston for the final approval of the 0.P.A.
The following names were sent in:
Andrew Coffin, Chairman, David Kimel, William ~cAloen, James Poor,
Fred Whittier, John Bamford, John Garvey, Frank Story, James Ewart,
Lester Perkins, and Frank Lee, Sr.
These names were presented at the meeting on Public Safety, held by
the'Committee Sunday Evening January 24, 1943, and was appr.ved
by unanimous vote. _
'A~etter received from the Eastern Massachusetts Street ~ailway Ce.,
concerning our letter for better bus service, te Steven~Corner was
sho~m by ~Ir. Foster t. Arthur Drummcnd the original petitioner who
said the' people would be satisfied with the service as suggested in
the letter.
On the metten ef Mr. Themsen, seconded by Mr. Finneram, it was unan-
imously voted to adjudicate Beech Street an~ Williams Street.
Mr. Thamson Made a motion, seconded by Mr. Finner~n to close the
Warrant.
