· "and Arthur Stead were_reappointed unanimously.
Fire Chief, James Hargreaves came in to the meeting and said that
the forest!~fire fighters had approached him to intercede for them
.for an increase in their hourly pay rate from the present .55~ per
ho~tr to at least town rates. They have to leave the mill to answer
a Call where they are now making from a $1.00 an hour 'to $1.50 per
· , hour and 'they feel they are losing money. Mr; Hargreaves wanted
' ' the advice of the Board on the matter.
.. Mr. Foster is of t~e opinion.they should receive the increase. Mr.
.., Thomson asked what the Town rates are. Tt was the feeling of the
.' Board that Mr. ,Hargr. eaves ,should 'do as he sees fit in the matter.
:Mr. ~enkins r~ceives $.68 per hour.and the other fighters know this.
'Mr. ~argreaves thanked the Board for their advice.
MrS. Thomson asked Mr. Hargreaves if ,he had .heard anything about the
'.new apparat, us. He said he had not but the rating of the town had
o:' b~n changed to, a Defense Area. He said .further that he expected
wholesale resignations, from the Fire Department ~a~ the end of the
year. Older men are not able to do the work now.

motion of Mr. Thomson, seconded by Mr. Finneran and ~-~mously carried.

· A report was received from Chief~lfred McEee in further reference to
the two cellars' refereed to himfor kttention.
With reference to the cellar on Lincoln Street, Mr. McKee states
that Mr. William Ford, the owner of the propertyw~ll' be willing
to.cooperate with the Selectmen in correcting the condition.- Due
to present.building conditions, Mr. Ford has been unable to finish
the house started.
Mr. McAloon, owner of the other cellar on-Faulkner':St~eet, feels
that the children should not-be' allowed to play there. It is
private property'and the street is not accepted. He ~'i's not able
to get materials to build at this time 'and does"'not' fo'eT that he
should have to fill in the excavation.
Mr. Thomson said that a very ~angerous conditio2 existed where
children play around these open' cellars~'and- suggested' that Mr.
Ford be asked to board in the cellar., "'Mrs' Finneran thought it
might create.a worse' condition if .the cellar were-boarded in but
later Mr. Thomson put' the' matter~to, a vote and'the'~mot[on was'
seconded to have Ohief McKee' carry' on' with Mr; Ford. and when hi
couldn't, get any further the'board could' step in. "~
With reference tothe Faulkner Road cellar Mr. Foster ~]ggested
that..Ohief McKee s`peak to MaAloon "again "an.d See 'if h?[:~Ouldn't do -
so~'~thing to correct the situation.
n the motion of Mr. Finneran Mr. 'Lewis-Rokes~ tho"present Commander
of tha-'American-Legion was' appointed Flag-Week:'Ohairmanf -Mr. Foster
said Mr.' D~vis suggested to him the commander of the 'Legion be appoint-

Mr. Foster advised that he had been contacted by Mr.' He~dricks, the
steeple Jack,who said the flag pole at Memorial Park was" in need Of

A Mr. ~enry D. Winslowof the firm of Winslow, Nelsan ~d~Winsl~w
of Cambridge came before the BoArd in reference to the O~therine.
Johnson Home which was left in the will 'of the late-catherine ~$hnson
to be made into a home for'e,l, derly Iadies over
age who did not drink or smoke. The hohe was left in "tr~t: and,lhas
been lying, idle for twenty-five years. Mr. Winslow r~pr~sented the,
heirs of Mrs. 'JOhnson and he said it was' propos~d:~'tha~~ the house-he~
sold and the proceeds . turmed:over to the town' fox~ A~-fttnd. Catherine
~ohnson is the last of her family and the heirs are'-'cousins- who are
well off in their own'r~ght. ~ They~would,like:-to have':~th~,eatate
settled. Mr. Winslow-,wanted to know--Ju~t':what 'the, needs 'orCa" home such
as Catherine Johnson had in mind would ,be~ anti-about how.:m~h ~t would
take' to establish such a fund; He was interested-in~l~arning Just
'whatthe local welfare problem~Was· and :if such'.a':fund'w~uld be feasible.
The heirs~ he said, ,are, ~nclined to do"'something' for~h~ir- cous~n,.but
they do not know' ~hether-the terms-of:'the- will~ can. be~'~e2 or'not.,
Mr. Foster said he know of the~fund but it was mentioned,~ars ago that'
there was ,not sufficient-me,at-'to maintain 'a home such~as, Oatherin~ .

Winslow. advised the Board. Mr~ Thomson-contacted Mr.~ S~gent to see
if it was in order.for the Board to give out facts'concerning'the
~elfare etc. to Mr. Winslow.. Mr. Sargent could see 'nO: harm i~ it.
Foster mentioned the fine work that Chief McEee-an~: Mr. :'Connor~
had done~at-'the cemetery and': said' they' should' be cOmm'endi~d for the"
improvement there.,, Mr. McXee said he is' to.'have a "~;o 'Dumping"', notice
in the paper so that the'people will 'keep the placelosk~ng neat,and
orderly. No further action was deemed necessary 'by.tha .~oard.

May 11, '1943 -' At the request' ,of-~Mr. Foster By phone, this date', Mr.
Stephen Farday was granted a i[Ce~se to sto~e and ~el[~&s'oline, at his
property 'on Salem Street.' ~e was' granted 'a ilicense 6/3~/41 'after due
hearing on his. application for the stoage and sale of. 1000 gallons of
gasoline, at his home on Salem Street. He did not renew this license
on time and 'the Town Clerk would not renew it for~him.~so ;the board
gr~ ted him a new license without another hearing.
