Its usuage would be increased by cutting down the trees. He said he felt satisfied that the port may be used by the government and as long as there is .a probability .thatit'might be used, I feel we would be derelict in our.duty not to do everything possible to make it ready should the,ne~d to use it or an'emergency arise. In normal times I would agree with these people but these are not normal time, he said. We are bound by .all the people and not by a particularportion of the people who are interested 'at this time. Mr. Thomson then made the following motion which was seconded by Mr. Finneran and unanimously carried: I move, Ur. Chairman, that we give authority to remove seventeen of the twenty trees, b~t'that authority be executed only if-tha air- portiscompleted and also as a condition I'would. like to'add that the City of Lawrence be-required~to plant in that section of~..the street-where the ~rees are removed, some smaller type trees that will not grow more than fifteen feet high, which would tend to replace.tha beauty that has been destroyed. I name seventee8 trees instead of twenty because when. we visited the airport recently, and examined the.airport very.carefully there were some one or. two ~trees not needed to be removedand we agree~ that the number should be" seventeed~ being the number:necessary for use of the ~2 runway. Et islalso condition upon. fha City Of Lawrence that the #2 r~nway shall, not start nearer than five hundred feet from Sutton Street. Mr. Finneran*offered t~e following.amendment'to the above:m'otion accepted: which was - Th~t'the City of Lawrence is to assume the 'expense 'of removal of the ~rees and the.work~ is to be s~pervised by our own.
