A State Aid report was signed by the Board for $10.00.
A Bulletin was received from Massachusetts State Headquarters for
Selective Service regarding a seven-man Hoard to be known, as~the
State Review"Committee. (Filed under Selective Service)
Executive order #64 was received. This refers to the use of town
trucks, trucking facilities, and, employees. The Governor has issued
an order whereby such trucks may be used (regardless of any existing
law or amendment) in the collection of scrap materials for Mass.-
November 8, 1943.

The regular weekly meeting of the Board of S~lectmen was held at 7.00 P.M.
with all members present. The weekly bills and payrolls were approved'.
A report.of State Aid fo~ $30.00 was approved; also an application for
· S~ate. Aid and Military Aid.
Mr. Elliott requested that,December 20, be set as the closing date to
accept budget figures'~ AY1 Department, Heads are to be notified.
Judge Mahoney came before the Board to present a recommendation for
accident'involving the ToM Fire Truck and automobile owned by'
Thomas Derby. Mr. Mahoney described the accident. He explained that
the Fireitruck ~river cut ·into the left and crashed the car. He did
not stop. The cost'will be $75- $150, but it can be settled fo~
$65.00. Mm. Thomson made emotion ~o accept the recommendation,
seconded by Mr. Finneran and voted unanimously.
Mr. Patterson 'of :the Lawrence Gas & Electric Company came before the
Board to discuss the shades on street lights..He expl~inedthat his
-., ,Companywculd prefer to.have shades removed as/they are an expense ~o
i ~ :11 the Company~ He suggested that the shields could be removed in ,
' ~i ~:serious ~anger spots and some could be cut off 1 1/2" in some cases,
~,~, ~ .. but the problem would be mo fi. nd the danger spots.' He explained that
~' the Army ,feels that submarines may returnto the coast and then there
would be trouble. Mr. Thomson suggested that the cost be cut down
'but Mr~~ Patterson saidthis could not be done as a good deal of ex-
pense has'resulted from these shields. Mr. Patterson explained that
the shortage' ofdhelp and weather conditions would prevent the return
of these shields within 24 hours, if all were removed. There are
~ ~' · over ~00 lights in town. One quarter of these could not be taken down
within'24 hqurs. Mr. Thomson suggested that this matter be held in
~eyance~unti! the ruling is received from. the Attorney-Gezeral.
Requests for new lights were discussed and it was decided to send new
requests for lights~ also .requests to bare the War Production~ Hoard
pass on thesereports. The Board feels that these lights are a
public necessity and hazardous conditions exist.
Mr. Hargreaves came in ts discuss the Christmas Toys. He explained
that materials would be scarce and the men.felt that there would be
very little need for this work this year. They also discussed the
750 gallon,pumper. Mr.· Hargreaves said that a letter badbeen sent
al:6ng with the application. A ~etter was received by the Board from
the W.P.B. expressing' regret that they are unable to ~ake favorebl~
recommendation. They arc,ill in a position to grant autbsrizat~$nu
'for a 500 gallon per minute fire apparatus.
