He doesn't feel that the Fire Station .should be left with no man on duty especially at this time of year when fires are so prevalent. Mr. Thomson asked the Chief what the manpower situation was at the present time and the Chiefreplied that they need three more men at least. There ~o three men on days and ~wo at night. If two men go with the ambulance ~%'night, the Chief or another member of the Board must come down ~o the Station to take over. If all men were out at a fire a~d ~ call came for the ambulance, it could not go out and there may be serious results. The Fire Chief said he, is more concerned about the day situation and he didn't feel that they should expec~ men to come from the Davis & Furber 0o. for ambulance work. ,We.~ust know at all times in order to cope with this situation. Mr. Holt askedSh~ Chief is he didn't feel that the ambulance was being abused and Mr. iHargrea~es said he felt that it was. Mr. Thomson felt that thislwas not fair..'If~a.~ patient can sit with the driver, it does not mean that the ambulance is abused and that this was apublic conw,~e and should be used as such.~ Mr. Foster~ asked i~ ~here would be any difference in the cos~ if a patient was taken ~in, a private car and both Chiefs replied no. Chief Harg~eaves said if~he had ~ to choose between a fire and the ambulance, he wo~!d attend the, fire,as that is his work. If spare drivers could be secured, that would help~,~he, situation but Just any man would~ not do. They must have some knowledge of first aid. Mr. Murphy said he thought that by advertising for a man, you would~find,~, out who is available and satisfactory. : Mr. Foster feltthe matter could be straightened out betweenthe two Chiefs and that they could probably find a man suitable to take over this work~ ~r. Thomson felt that this was a matter that came under the jurisdiction. of the Selectmen and that both chiefs should be held responsible untit~. . suitable~arrangements could be made. Mr. ~oster thanked the group for_> ~. attending the meeting. MEN AND WO~N IN SERVICE ..letter was received from F. M. 'Lawlor, 1st. Sgt. Medical Co, su~ggesting that the Selectmen do something about finding adequate facilities' to take care of various service.men and women in this town. The Board decided: take this ma~er up-with the A~erican Legion and ask for their opini'~s in ~the matter. They will be invited to come ~fore the board with ,an~ suggestions.
