Chadwick Street. Gordon Gaffney, city clerk of Lawrence stated tha~ when t~TM
plan was presented previously requested removal of ~rees, the suggestion at
that time was tha~ the wires would be placed mnderground with underground
conduits but this was ebJected't~ because of interference caused by electrical.
storms. The final plan was to run the wires UP .Chadwick Stree~ and Iccp back
at Finnegan's. The Lawrence G & E Co. acceded'to this plan.
Mr. Thomson stated that if poles are down and re-routed it would cost between
$400 and $500 to take care of wiring of the fire alarm.
Mr. Gaffney suggested that the the N.E. T I & TEl Co. already has conduits on
Chadwick St. and one of these is reserved~for towns which could be used with
new cable. He said that on telephone or fire alarm cables, the low voltage
does have so much distrubance from electrical storms, He also discussed the
cost and felt that the whole Job would be.~ompletedfor $100 and that perhaps
the N.E. T & T Co. would pull the cable for the tow~. This cable can be
bough~ for five or ten cents per foot. He had discussed this matter with Mr.
Wingate of Lawrence and his idea was that it could be completed for $100.
Deputy Chief Leo Eane estimated $400 approximately to change the wires sE the
fire alarm system. Mr. Eane said the Fire Department has no appropriation which
could be used for this work.
Joseph V. Flanagan representing the N.E. Tel. & Tel. Co. stated that he felt
sure that his company would co-operate and that he felt sure they would pull the
cable in and he would take the matter up with the construction department.
Mr. Gaffney stated that the City of Lawrence had spent~a great deal of money
fixing up Clark Street and this work alone cost $5,000. He said he could see no
way by which the City ~f Lawrence could help financially. He stated that the
new runway was almost complete and the removal of the trees will soon be
requ.ested~ and he felt that the trees and poles should come out at the same time.
Mr. Thomson then said that apparently the matter could not go over until the
next annual Town Meeting to ge~ the $200;.
There was a general discussion and Mr. Gaffney said that the Fire Department
problem w~s not known to him but he felt that the fire alarm division
would be glad to co-operate. It was suggested that the Highway be requested
to help by digging the trenches and with the cooperation of the Telephone
Gas Company and City of Lawrence the ~xpense would be much less than the amount
first anticipated.
M~. Thomson suggested that the matter be continued until the next meeting on
July,30, and that in the meantime request that ~. Ela~gan and Mr. Barry
discuss this matter with their companies, and see if a solution can be reached.
Mr. Foster seconded tb~s mo~ion, put by Mr. Thomson.
