VETEHANS FOREIGN ~AI~S
Leo Murphy ant Walter Hamilton appeared before the Board in behalf of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars 0rgsnization and reques~ea that the Town of North
Andover provide coal fcc the Franklin School where they intend %o hold their
meetings. ~Ir. Murphy stated that it is legal for the %own to furnish heaZ,
under Chapter 40, Section 9. They state6 tha~ the boiler had not been inspected
since 1941. ~,~. ~,lurphy also reported that he had been informed that there
is surplus proper~y available which they will probably purchase for their
organization. ]~r, Finneran made a mo~ion to t~ke this ma~er under advisement.
Mr. Thomson made a motion to purchase ~wo tons of coal and pay for it from
the Conti~gencyFund. Mr. Finneran seconded this motion and vo~e was unanimous.
FLOOD SITUATION:
~r. John Pillion came before the Board ~o mk for information regarding the
Flood s~tuation. He understood that they were going right along in Lav~ence
and he wanted %o know wham was ~o be done in North Andover. A letter received
by the Board of Selectmen was read and Mr. Pillion felt that his question
was answered by this letter.
WAR DEPARZ'~E~;T*E~Gi;~ER OFFICE* FLOOD CONTROL:
Letter received from C. T. Hunt, Col. Corps of Engineers, with reference to
Congressiooal authorization for const=uc~ion of local flood protection for this
town, andto the resolution passed on 3/27/1944 whereby the Town would cooperate
with the Federal Government and provide necessary lands, msements and rights-of-
way for such construction.
Contrac~ plans are being prepared and close contact will be msinm~ined with the
town engineer in regard to location of the protection works.
REOUE~.T FOR RD~.IOVAL OF TREE
RequeS~ for removal of tree in fron~ of his proper~ya~ 146 High Street,~was re-
ceived from George Emery. Letter s~a~es that this ~ree keeps the sunlight out
sad the house is very dark. I~r. Thomson made a motion ~o refer this matter
to John Connors, ~ree warden, and post it for hearing, on 10/8/1945.
RECENT DROWNING ACCIDENT:
A letter was received from Abbo~ Stevens s~a~ing that N.T. Stevens Company
will be glad ~o send a representative to mee~ with the Board of Selectmen
in regard to the recen~ drowning accident. Miles Eiggins , Treasurer of
Suttons Mills talked ~o Mr. Foster and they will send a representative
to sit in with the Board of Selecmmen whenever convenien~. Mr. Thomson made
~ motion ~o invite the representatives of both companies wo meet with the
Board on October 1, 1945 at 8:00 o'clock. Mr. William E. Puffy will also
be asked ~o come in.
REQUEST FOR ST~W.EET L!GHT~
A re~ues~ for a stree~ light on Glenwood Avenue was received from Grace
Sor~ello which is very dark. Mm. Fost*r suggested that we check and,see'~
if this is an accepted street and held bhis matter over until nex~ week.
REOUES.TFOR S~VYI~G MAC~II~E:
A reques~ was received through Leo Kane for a sewing machine left over
since W .P.A. opersted. The board suggested that we check them and see
if there are any which were donated and if so, contact the owner and see
if they sre willing ~o loan them. Those belonging to the town cannot be
sold unless an article is put in the town~,arrant.
LETTER OF THAN~S:
The board requested that letters commending the local police and firemen
for their fine work during the recent drownins accident, be sent ~o each
chief.
