The land could be taken by eminent domain, taxes, etc. and the town is also authorized to set up a housing plan. Mr. Salisbury then said that he had. collected the 1946 statutes and had copies available for everybody. Briefly, said Mr..Salisbury, Mr. ?/illis is wrong, when he states that the Selectmen are responsible for this housing for veterans. It is up to the people of the town at the town meeting. There are severaZ' things which can be done: We can establish an information center Investigation and survey of the town can Be instigated; Find out housing situation and make recommendations. Can take over apartments Get track of land and rent it for 1.0~ year. .Town can place temporary buildings such as "quonset huts ,ct barracks" But before going ~oo far, s4id Mr. Salisbury, we would want a survey of the town made to find out how many veterans are without homes. Cornelius ~bonoy asked Mr.' Willis how serious this situation is and how many veterans are in need of he,sing,. But this information could not be furnished. Ralph Crompton stated that this committee represented an organization and we want a survey made. Mr. Willis suggested' t~t the first thing was to set up a housing authority to make this aw-vey and the town can spend $1.000 to make it. ' Mr. Salis~try informed~ Mr. Willis that he was again wrong , that spent ,ml~ss the town votes on it; Mr. Thomson asked if the veterans were interested ina temporary arrangement but Mr.. Eoenig appeared,helots the hoard to discuss ,the :request of a fire alarm box at the Brooks School, which was made recently. Mr. ~oenig stated that he had. asked the Gamewell Fire Alarm Company to check on this situation and give an estimate.as to the'coat. A letter from ~he Gamewell Company was read by Mr. Thomson and the coat submitted ~y tnis company was.S3,273.20. This figure was given to Mr. Gerraght~ 'of;the. Brooks School and a letter was sent to the Board of Engineers to ~Athdraw'this'request. Mr.~,Xoenig,brought out at the meeting that at some future .~date if an amarm was _ ;. installed in this vicinity, it might, he well to install boxes near the North Au~cver Private Hospital and Campion TREE REMOVAL A hearing on,the removal 'of a tree at the corner of Greene S~reet a~d Massachu- setts Avenue on the petition of Frank Giaquinte of 144 Boxford Street, Lawrence w~s',held at 7~20 P.M. Mr. Connors notified this office~that the tree should he removed. The hoard voted ,,--nimously to grant this request.
