HomeMy WebLinkAbout1947-04-14'294 4PRIL 14, 1947: AMBULANCE BIDS: The Board discussed the ambulance bids with Forbes Rockwell, who was picked as the member of the Advisory Board to consider the buying 'of the new ambulance. Mr. Hargreaves explained about th~ different companies who~have ambulances available and mentioned that the Troy Company~quoted one at a difference of about $100. He felt that bids shoul~be called for onthe Buick and Cadillac cars. This matter was discussed for some time And the board agreed to ask for bids from the three companies mentioned by' Mr. Hargreaves and ask that they be received in the Selectmen's not later thanT:30 P.M. on April 21, 1947. DAMAGE CLAIM: Chief Engineer James Hargreaves presented a bill for $121.85 caused ,when' the fire truck crashed into his parked car on Main Street near Morton-- Street, on March 21, 1947. The accident was unavoidable and the board ~.. -agreed that this bill should be paid by the town and arranged to have a release signed By Mr. Sherlock and the bill would then' be l~id. WIDENING OF SUTTON STREET NEAR HIGH STREET: Ira Carry, John Connors, and members of the Advisory Board met with th~~ ~1 Selectmen to discuss the widening of Sutton Street ~ear High Street and':? - also the removal of three trees at that 'point which' is on town owned 'land. Francis Xittredge of' the Advisory Hoard asked if the Selectmen feel that' this project would remedy any serious condition existing there; He asked if this board had any record of accidents at that point and explained. 'that the police records show no accident experience at this spot. The ' most recent accident was discussed as to the speed at the time..of_the: ': accident. The Advisory Board members~tried-out the actual speHd.of ,~, -, 40 miles per hour, with the permission: of' the police, end they informed 1~ the board that a person could easily go forty' miles per hour without'any trouble. Arthur Sunderland of the Advisory Board asked if this money was proposed as a transfer from the Reserve Fund becau-~e this was felt to be an emergency 'and asked what brought*this matter up at' this time, and questioned' if it should come from Reserve Fund. . , . , . ...,,::. Mr. Thomson explained 'that the ReserVe Fund is 'to replenish an appropriation:,, which is no~ sufficient to take care of the expenses :for the year. The matter of the removal of the trees at'this point was held over unti_l i next Monday. when a report will be available from' the Advisory Board;' BOND- TP~EAS .U~tER OF DISTRICT OF NORTH ANDOVER AND BOXFORD: "' A bond covering James J..Makeras treasurer of District of North Andover and Boxford, effective 4/8/1947 for the amount of $1,000 was approved by the 'Selectmen. Bond is in the Great Pond Insurance Agency, Inc. 295 AP~:rL 14, 1947: HOUSTNG SHORTAGE: A letter was received from Governor Bradford thanking this board for the information sent to him on the housing problem in North Andover and stating . that he will give careful consideration to the comments and suggestions contained in~'our letter to him. · The regular weekly metering of the B~ard of Selectmen was held at 7:00 P.M. with. all members present., Wmekly bills and ~ayrolls were approved. HOUSING DTSCUSS!OIt: Four'Veterans came before the board and discussed the. possibility of converting Quonset Huts into homes and stated.tha~ there are a good number of veterans ~ho would be willing to live in the. se huts temporarily, possibly £or four or five years. The~, ,. boys stated, that. they hsd figured the cost. at $1250 which includes ~ settmng up, converting and delivery. The huts are separate and a~e about 16'x36t: Russell Donnelly informed the board that Neverly has set some up and they have ' been found to be very satsifactory. Mr..Salisbury pointed ou~ ~hat the Noerd of Appeals are considering the Dutch ~lat~, problems and also that there is some new legislation program going int~ . .~ :'~ff~t which may change everything. ' ::Mr~ 'Thomson mentioned that this board had gone alOng'on the assumption that it was~ n~t proper to ask the v~terans to live in' these,huts' but' the boys stated' tHa~' conditions are such that they would be willing to take a chance on these h~s~ for a few years and they feel that the co'st per month would not be excessive Mri'.Thomson suggested thal~ they' contact the Housing Committee and see what they think about .this proposition as they were definitely against any ~emporary ~"-..' arrangement. · :.
