Mr; Salisbury then inquired what rental the veteran could pay and ~r.
mentioned $30 to $40 monthly. ..
Mr. Wolsey stated that,in Nashua, N.B. the veterans are paying ~39.O0 a~'m6nth
which includes taxes and the houses are ~sessed for $2500.
Mr. Sunderland inquired how this type of house compared with the houses .now
being built in Lawremce.
Mr. Alter explained that the houses go through the ~onventional proces~'~n
construction and gave a thorough description of the house. The:houseis~,
Cap~ Cod style and cannot be built for a lower price, Architects in Salem
cannot understand how we can build these houses for'this price and they
give s price of $8500 for the same type of house ....
Charles Cyr then talked to the veterans and explained that inLawrence t~e. ..
veterans drew lots and.after it was assigned they got'a clear deed. N~ed '
was a.requisite.
Mr. Salisbury inquir6d if the price for these same houses in North Andover'
would be the same but Mr. Cyr stated thst with the increase in materials
the same house would cost~$650 in North Andover if at least ten houses ~.
were built on Sne site, and there would be no decrease in price even if;
a larger number of houses were built.
Mr. Thomson inquired of Mr. Eittredge if the Adviscr~ Board felt that it
is necessary to call a special town meeting to provide means for quonse~t~i~
huts for ~eterans. Mr. Kittredge'stated that his board wmu!d be willing,: ':~
~o ad~se mpea~Z~cles~thatt~ight be prepared for a special meeting but
could not make decisions until the articles are drawn up. ~,~,,.~
2here was s general discussion and several veterans suggested that ~':~
the meeting was getting away from the original purpose of the meeting whic
was quonset huts. The boys felt that they needed homes in a hurry and~uo~et
huts would solve their problem. Mr. Thomson inquired if they w~re to.have
these huts'and after several months, they found a home, would they cons$~er ·
~emaining in the huts for the five years or move out as soon as something ,.,
else was available. The veterans stated that they would move out in twoi.~ ~--~- ·
months if they found a permanent home. .
Mr. Thomson then stated that this problem, needs immediste attention and
asked 'the veterans if they would be content to leave this matter to :th~
:Se!ectmen and Advisory board to arrange'for a special town meeting and~ ~''.

Russell Donnel!y stated that they have hsd meetings before and they have,.~
been dropped and they were' told not to have to8 many veterans at this
m~eting and it looked as if theywere~ gettihg tossed around. ~. ? , '~;~
MrJSalisbury~stated that thiswas not true~ that this meeting was calIed~
and that this board had made .suggestions"which would help tbs veterans~'-~-
and now they were planning to hold a specialtown meeting to further~lp'~
the veterans.
A discussion took place about thaRehabilitation Fund and John'Wi!lis~asked:
why this could not be used f~r this purpose~
C~J. MahoneY explained that ~his moneywas no longer available~andthat
the schools had received a pa~t of it. and streets, etc. Mr. Mahoney explaine~
that~Ohapter 10, Acts of 1946 explain how this money, was allowed to'be '~
vo~ed for use for the above purposes. '-
Mr. Thomson then stated' that if there were mo more questions, he feltlthat'~''~ ·
there was sufficient~discussion to have the matter go befores townmeeting~
He said that the Bo~rd of Selectmen was only a conduitand have no auther~ty
,to spend any m$ney but they could,present it to the people at a special town
meeting and they would plan this in the very noar future. Mr. Mahoney~-!
wil!draw up a series ofarticles to be presented to the people at this~ '"
meeting.

Permission was granted to the Teen Age Club at the Center to use the, hall/
on May 16, 1947 to run a dance. This was la,er cancelled byFred Wya~t'~w~o
called to say that their plans had been changed. ','i'
INSURANCE: '~ ~ ·
Notice received that Frank'H. Dushame,~r. has been .added for a pro rata'l,p~emi~m
of $6.50 effective April 7, 1947 on the list of the ihsured's paid policemen.
LAND COURT:
Mr. C. J. Mahoney submitted a letter on the matter ~ a title to be perfected
for land sold by the town to E. Dewey Dyer on Pzospect Street. .The plan filed
is correct ~nd Mr. ~ahoney has withdrawn the Team's appearance and registration
will proceed immediately. No action takenby the board. This matter had,been
referred to Mr. Mahoney some time ago for a decision.
