Then Mr. Thomson thanked him for the compliment but stated that he felt
that's man who hsd served as a druggist for so'many years and s man who -.
was a member of the bar, certainly had enough intelligence to fill the
office of fire engineer.
Mr. Thomson then went on with the motion made by Mr. Finneran and seconded
by Mr.'~Sa!isbury that ~the present encumbents be re-appointed and asked~that
he be recorded as not voting.
RECREATIONAL COUNCIL:
Rev. Ralph D. York came before the board to ask for the a~,proval of this
board to secure equipment for the playgrounds as contained in the article
which was voted on in March. Rev. York stated that the council plans to
contact organizations, business concerns, individuals and hope to
secure moneyfor this equipment. He stated that a plan will be organized~
and will be announced soon if approval is given by the Selectmen. The
Council would be the trustees over any funds which comes into their possession.
Mr. Thomson stated that he not only agrred with Mr. York but would like
to compliment him and Other members on the manner if which they have carried
on this work.
Rev. York explained that ~hey have several applications for instructors
end'recommendations will be made by the Recreation Committee.
Mr. Sa!isbu~y brought up the matter of skating rinks and stated that
this matter was brought Up annually but he felt that this was the time
to start thinking about them so that some action could be taken.
Sa!isburymentioned the Union School and also Grogan's Field and
school which was started last year but s~srted too late.
Mr. Thomson mentioned that this had been considered previously and suggest~
that Nfl York take care of this early this year.
Rev. York stated that Mr. Lumene!lo would contact A!de~man Donohue of Lawrsnce,
and this would be kept in mind.

DEPARTMENT'OF PUBLIC WORKS:
Letter and copy of order drawn on North Andover in favor of J. F. White
Contracting Co. for the sum of $4,406.23, an'acco~ht of work done under~'
contract with the town was receivedon May 14, 1947. The bill for t~,amount
of $4~406.23 was given to the Highway Department who sent it through for
approval by the Selectmen. ~,.,
RESIGNATION:
The Board accepted the,resignation of ElwynA. King es a member of the Board
of Appeals, effective May 15, 1947, and as a member of the P!anning, Board~ ';
Meeting adjourned.
The regular weekly meeting of the Board of Selectmen was ~eld on thisj~ay
at 7:00 P.M. with all members present. Weekly bills and payrolls were'· ·
approved.
CO~UNITY CENTER-CELEBRATION Fourth of July:
Mr. Leo Hickey and Mr. Philip Busby. came %efore the board and stated'{hat
they wereplanning a celebration on the nightbefore the Fourth at th%~
center and were planning on having a horribles parade as well as msny,
other activities. They mske~ that the selebtmen allow them to use $65.00
for the expense of the band and which is the same amount as allowed !ast~
year. Mr. Salisbury felt that this was a good idea and that the celebration
had been a great success last year. He then made e motion that the amount
of $65.00 be allowed for this. purpose and that it be taken from the ~ntingent
Fund. Motion was seconded and vote was unanimous.
Mr. Hickey then invited the Selectmen to ac~ as the Judges for the parade
but after some ~eliberation the board suggeste~ that the committee,appoint
s committee and if the Selectmen will go along with them. ~Mr.
