HomeMy WebLinkAbout1947-09-2231.8 SEPTEMBER 15, 1947- continued LAWRENCE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Board received an .fnvitation to attend the Lawrence Civic Luhcheon at the Boys' Club Auditorium on September 25, at 12 Noon. MEETING ADJOURNED: to be held SEPTEMBER 22, 1947: The regular weekly meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held at 7:00 P.M. with all members present. Weekly bills and payrolls were approved. INSURANCE , HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES: Francis O'Brien, Supt. of Schools came before the board at the request of the School Committee to discuss insurance for the high school athletes. The committee sent a letter to the board advising them that sanction by Town Meeting is necessary before the School ~ommittee can expend money to insure school children against injuries sustained in gsmes or contests conducted as a par~ of the physical education program. A copy of Chapter 525 and Chapter 40, section 5 as amended was enclosed which refers to the Act authorizing the appropriation of money,by towns for the payment of reasonable expenses incurred by or in behalf of.certain injured school children. The question of a special town meeting was discussed and the amount of money which would be required was discussed at length. .Mr. O'Brien wes not surelof the amount they would want and Mr. Salisbury suggested that they ask for $500 more or less and have the School committee ge~ accurate figures. Mr. Salisbury feltthat the~meeting should be held as soon as possible if the boys were to benefit by the insurance..~ ~his year. Mr. Thomson felt that we should wait until after the next school committee which is to be held on 0ctoberl6 and give them a chance to get 'the correctfigures. Mr. O'Brien then stated that he felt sure that the school committeewasenotT. requesting a special town meeting at this time and ~r. Salisbury stated'th~t~that was the opinion he had when he talked to Charles Trembly earlier. Mr. Thomson stated that the school committee might well prepare programs and make suggestions to the Selectmen to incorporate in sn ar%icle. The bosrd:wilL~wait un~il they hear from the school committee further. .~_.~ LAWRENCE GAS & ELECTRIC COMPAq: A petition ~o install gas service for Mitchell Bootman, 231 Pleasant Street, North Andover, 19 feet on street and to excavate to install gas service for Richard S. Hil$on, Prescott Street corner of Upland Road, 13 feet on s~reet.was~approved unanimously by the board. Letter informing the board that the following lights have been insta!led~ was received from the above company: Pol~ 824, High Street, Poles 830 and 835 High Street, Pole 2714 on Prescott Street and Chickering Road and pole 2994 on Sutton Street Mr. Frost had previodsly called this office to say that they would be able get the 2500 lusen lights for Rosedale avenue but the board 'decidedthat~.they would wait for the 1000 lumen lights. ~.~ THEE RF~IOVALREQUEST: William Tullis of Union Street has requested that ~ large tree on Baldwin. Road be removed. He stated that the tree is large and rotted in the middle and is a hazard. The Board voted to refer this matter to John Conners, treewarden; OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY: Notice that an application for a certificate of incorporation as provided in Chapter 180 of the General Laws, was received and the board voted to ~fer the name of James Terret of 52 Beverly Street to the Police Chief for investigation, and report to this board. STEVENS HALL: ~ Mrs. Abbott called to ask for permission to use Stevens Hall on October 2, 1947 for the Parent-Teachers AssociAtion. Board vo~ed unanimously to grantthis request. Dorothy Dow asked for permission for the North Andover Woman's Club to use Stevens Hall on October.29, for the annual scholarship bridge. ARTICLE FOR WARR~/.IT: An article to be inserted in the warrant of the next special townmeeting'wa~ received by the board and placed on file. The article is signed by Stanley Stefanowiecz and others and is to change the classification of certain premises from agricultural to business area. ~EETING ADJOURNED:
