Duffy requested a transfer of $60.00 from the Reserve Fund to the appropriation of Grogan's Field Playground to take care of unpaidhills for the year 1947. The hoard voted to refer this to the Advisory board for their approval. FIRE DEPARTMENT: Chief James Hargreaves came hefore the hoard to discuss salaries for the last week of the ~ear and the halance of the week which runs into 1948. Chief Hargreaves explained that Mr. Maker suggested that the department split their payrolls to finish cut the year 1947 and Mr. Hargreaves said if this ' is done, it will mean asking ~for 53 weeks salary for 1948. Mr. Thomson' felt that Mr. Maker was right and suggested that Mr. Hargreaves split payrolls and ask for the appropriationneeded for the coming year. . COASTING: Mr. Thomson brought up the matter of coasting and having streets blocked off · when there is sufficient snow to do this. The following streets will be'blocked', off when the weather is good: Great Pond Road, Union Street, Rerrick-R~d and perley Road. The following s~reets will he sanded at the intersections.to protect children and prevent their ~coastlng at dangerous spots and' are as follows: Church and Water; Furber Ave. and High. Street; Merrimack Street-and Water; Second and Railroad Ave; Maple Ave. and Railroad Ave; Linc01n,and~. POLICE DEPARTMENT-CIVIL SERVICE: A letter received from Civil .Service gives authority under the provisions of Chapter 13, Sec. 5, Acts of 1942 for the continued provisional appointment of Frank H. Dushame'andEverett Woodhouse as patrolment for' six months~ pending the establishment of an eligible list, ~ertification and appointment therefrom. An examination for police entrance wl_ll be'held at' the earliest possible date. ,~ AMERICAN LEGION: MONUMENT ~AT H.IGH SCHOOL: .:~ ~ A letter was received from the ~erican Legion regarding the placing of'a · plaque or marker ~n the monument in front of the town hall. The Legion· has received inquiries fromstudents and townspeople as to the significance of' this monument and they have asked for consideration of~this suggestion,S:.. Mr. Salisbury suggested that an investigation he made and an estimate of. the cos~ be obtained. The board finally voted to refer this matter to John A'. Cronin, chaiz~an, of the War Memorial Committee and ask that he work in conjunction with 'the'.. Legion as to the type of plaque and also the cost of same. Letters .will! be sent to Mr. Cronin and to JOHN J. Lyons, Adjutant of the American Legion. The Flag Committee has $186.17 in their h~lance and it was suggested, that this money might be used for the purpose of buying a plaque. TREASURER= . Mr. Maker spoke to the board ahout arriving at a figure for the coming year for the ~eterans Agent~ Mr. Cole is to come 'to North Andover to-night and Mr. Maker will discuss the matter with him as the figure m~st be given to the Assessors at an early date. The board'voted to leave the matter in the~ hands of the treasurer. FENCE AROUND PONDS: Chief McKee reZurned a report regarding the amount of fence erected around Suttons Pond and he stated that no gate had heen installed as yet at'.{he Boston and Main Railroad property known ss "Dizzy Bridge". There is s large.tract cf water where there is ac 'fence. Mr. Thomson suggested that· the matter~h~ taken up ~ith the officials at Suttons Mills to ~ind out when the work~ will 'he completed or what the delay is. INSURANCE: Letter received from Andrew F. Coffin relative zo the insurance coverage, of John J. Donovan of $ William Street, who was an elected and appointed~constahle and he suffered a hreak in the third joint of the small finger in his.left hand. and a dislocation of Zhe second joint of the same finger while on police duty on 0ctoher 31.1947.
