The regular weekly meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held on this day
with all members present. Weekly bills and payrolls were approved.
NEW ENGLANDTEL. & TEL. CO:
A pe.tition for covering ground wire on various streets was received from this
Company on Plan 8 and two forms of order, ~o be signed and approved by the
Water Department. There is no hearing required and the Selectmea approved
the petition unanimously and copies of the order will be given so the Water
Department for their approval. List of the streets filed under the above
company.
SCHOOL COMMITTEE:
An inquiry from the School Committee about Grogan's Field and what action
was taken by the Selectmen on the letter of November 22, from this committee.
A copy of a progressive report from C. J.. Mahoney, ~o whom this ma~ter was
referred, was sen~ to the School Committee and a letter informing them that
further information is expected in the near future at which ~time we. wilL
send them a detailed report.
FOREST FIRE WARDEN:
Approval of James Hargreaves appointment as Forest Fire Warden for the year
1948 was received from Raymond J..Kenney, Director and State Forester.
ARTICLE FOR WARRANT:
Mitchell Bootman came before the board with an article for sewer construction
and asked if her could have it inserted dn the warrant. The Board informed
him that the warrant closed on January 12 and nothing could be done unless
a special town meeting were to be held at which time he could have the article
inserte& in that warrant provided he had the required number of.names shich
is 100. He agreed to have the names and will send the article to this office.
LAWRENCE GAS &.ELECTRIC COMPAq:
A letter from the Lawrence G & E Co. informed the hoard that they could install
thirty-one lights along Salem Turnpike, Hillside Road and By-Lass and on Salem
Street a: a cost of $558 per year to .the Town, which would give a uniformly
lighted highway over the entire distances involved. The company is contemplating
a reduction in the price of 2500 lumen lights from $35.00 to $28.00 per year for
units connected zo the over head distribution system. There will be thirty-two
of these~nits aha at a saving ef$7 pe~year per light, this will mean a
saving of $224 to the town. Applying this saving to the cos~ of the thirty-
one lights suggested on ~he above street, less the cost of the seven time clock
units which would be $126 per year so that the actual cos~ to the towfi for
the thirty-one lights would be $208 der year. The board voted to take no
action on this matter a~ the present time and to so inform The 'Lawrence Gas
& Electric Company.
RELEASE SIGNED:
A release in consideration of the sum of Twelve Dollars ($12.00) for cost of
damage to his automobile was received from Matthew T. Coyne and this~amount
will be paid from the contingent fund. Mr. Coynegs car was damaged by,the
North Andnver ambulance on December 26, 1946.
EASTERN MASS. RAILWAY COMPANY: ~
A reply to our recent letter regarding complaints about the RailroadAvenue-
High Street bus route wasreceived and Mr. Chase explained that conditions
are such that he cannot make any'corrections in the conditions of this route
at the present time. He explained that they have eight to ten buses.out! of
service each day and it has become impossible to procure additional buses from
other divisions as conditions are the same elsewhere. He explained that because
of.the condition of Middlesex Stree~ as to width that has been plowed, they may
have to discontinue operation on this street at any moment. He assured the
board that'they will do everything in their power to give these people so,ice
as soon as possible.
OUTDOOR ADV~TISING:
Notice received from Charles F. ,Nayor, Chairman of the Outdoor Advertising
Authority of 100 Nashua Street, Boston 14, that he wishes to personally go on
record as favoring the holding of public hearings either in the town or city
requesting same or at some convenient central point within the respective
counties.
