HomeMy WebLinkAbout1948-03-0135O The regular weekly meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held at 7:00 P.M. withall members present. Weekly bills and payrolls were approved. RESIGNATION: Arnold Salisbury tendered his resignation as a member of the AdvisoryBoard of Vetersn's Services to become effective as of March 1, 1948: Mr. Thomson made a motion that this matter be held in abeyance until s meeting could be held of all members of the Veteran's Services. Motion was seconded.byMr. Finneran and was a majority vote. LAWRENCE GAS &ELECTRIC COMPANY: Permission was granted to excavate to repair a leak in gas-service at 36-38 Tater Street, by unanimous vote of the board. NEW POST OFFICE: Letters were received from Leverett Saltonstall acknowledging our letter of February 10 relative to the erection of a new post office and stating that he had ~nclosed a letter from the Fourth Assistant Postmaster General Walter Myers. Mr. Myers letter stated that North Andover has been listed as an eligible project and careful consideration will be given at the appropriate time. A letter to the board was also received from Walter Myers which contained practically the same information. DA~GECLAIM: A letter was received from John Donovan of $ Williams Stree~ stating that he had fractured his finger on October 31, 1947 while doing police duty and- the doctor's Bill was $35.00. Since there is no insurance available for this accident, Mr. Donovan asked that the town reimburse him for the amoun~ of his doctor's bill. The board voted unanimously to grant this request after a release is signed byMr. Donovan. BRECINCT OFFICER'S INCREASE: The Board voted unanimously to increase the precinct officers and all other persons who wdrked on this day at the polls,, to $2.00 more for this day only. Mr. Thomson explained that several of the officers had mentioned an ' increase as Lawrence had given one this year. Due to the heavy vote expected there will be more work and perhaps longer hours to finishup 'the counting. Some' of the people'sacrifice their day' s pay by working for the,amount gi, v~n by the town. The board agre6d that this was the right,thing 'to do. STEVENS HALL: John Donovan requested permission to use Stevens Hall on April 8 and 9, to hold a minst=&l~show which is to be given by the American Legion, Po~t'1219. The board voted unanimously to grant this reques~ and Mr. Hayes bas the hall available for th~se two nights. MR. SALISBURY: ~' Mr. Salisbury ended his year as Selectman and the board informed him that they had enjoyed working with him for the past two years and he, in turn, stated that he had enjoyed it also and that it had been a fine experience for him. MEETING ADJOURNED: The regular weekly meeting c~ the Board of Selectmen was held on this day with all members present. Weekly bills and payrolls ~ere approved. EASTERNMASS. RAILWAY CO~ANY-REQUEST: A request was received from the workers at the 0sgood Mills to have the Board of Selectmen contact the Eastern Mass. Railway Company and ask if the~ could sr~ange to have s bus wait for about 30 to 35 ~eople who leave .the mill at 4:30 P.M. and Just miss that bus and have to ~ait until five o'clock each night. Occasionally a bus comes along Before five o'clock and it is so crowded that it does not stop to pick up these passengers. The board voted to contact Mr. Chase and see what he could do to help this situation a~d if no results are obtained then the board will take farther action. Mrs. Dearden will contact Mr. Chase in regard to this matter. OONGRESSMANLANE: A letter with further reference to our letter of ~ebruary lC, was received from Congressman Thomas J. Lane and a copy of a bill which he filed in Congress on the matter of a nre Post Office in the Town of North Andover. The board ~oted to acknowledge the bill and thank Mr. Lane for his prompt action.
