HomeMy WebLinkAbout1948-04-16374 APRIL 16, 1948-continued VETERANS HOUSING COMMITTEE: Mr. McAloon stated that the to~n has 90 days from March 30, ~o ask for this grant. Under this plan, the town would provide a sum not to exceed $7500 for the initial undertaking such as engineering, surveys, drawing of plans etc. which would be refunded later by the state. The $25,000 appropriation voted at a special town meeting last year could be returned to the treasury. Mr. McAloon stated that the Housing Authority would take charge and collect the rents and the town would pay the water and sewer. Sewer assessments would be paid by the Housing Authorities. There is no decision as to what kind of houses would be built whether single apartments or two family houses. Hr. Coffin stated that it was gratifying to have such a report and he said he would like to study the problem. The other members also felt that they would like a little time to study this matter and the board voted to take the matter up at a later meeting. FIRE DEPARTMENT: James Howarth and James Donohue outside wire chief and service foreman came before the board at the request of the Selectmen ~o discuss the problem of changing the fire alarm so that it would not interfere with the telephone wires, on South Bradford and Winter Streets. There was a general discussion about this ~roblem and Mr, Howarth e~plained that the wires of the fire alarm run on pins parallel to the Telephone Company lines. He Said that the growth is so thick that they need the pin position which are being used by the Fire Department. He said that there would be plenty of room if they go up two feet on the same pole. Mr. Hargreaves stated that this would be expensive and ~they would have to hire a crew of men to do this work as his men could not do it. He also mentioned his appropriation which would not be large ehough to cover this work which he estimated at a cost of $400.00. Mr. Coffin inquired if the telephone company could do this work at the same time they are changing over ~hei~ wires and it would be easi~rrbut Mr. Hargreaves stated that the ~elephone company could not do this work as they are not ~overed by insurance. Mr. Howarth explained that they could not touch the wires but until the fire alarm circuits are changed over, the telephone company could not give the service that. is requested. Mr. Thomson then instructed Mr. Hargreaves to get a fair estimate for this work and to use the money that is available and if more is needed at the end of the year, a tranfer could be requested from the Reserve Fund. Mr.' Thomson informed Mr. Howarth that the board would take this under consideration and let the company k_now what their decision is. RECEEATIONAL COMMITTEE: A letter was received from Myra Stillwell informing the board that she would be glad to serve on this committee. Mrs. Elixabeth Elliot presented a bill for expenses to the Conference held at Amherst recently and also a report to the board. She explained that there was a l~rge and sin6erely interested group of men and women and valuable information Was exhhanged. Several men spoke of tying in the use of school buildings With recreational programs and one member stated that there is a definite trend in this direction throughout our country. William Smith was appointed chairman of the committee by unanimous vote. PEPJ~NENT WAR MMMORIAL C0~MITTEE: Mr. John Oronin stated that he plans to call. a meeting in the near future to discuss the permanent war memorial which was ,~oted favorably under article 61 at the Annual TownMeeting. LAWRENCE GAS &ELECTRIC COMPANY: The board voted unanimously to grant permission.to have a street light installed on Bacon Avenue. This request was made several years ago but materials were not a~ailable. LIGHTS INSTALLED: Report received that a street light has been installed on Pole 3152, Walnut Street as requested in February, 1948, (2500 lumen). Report that two (1000 luSen) lights have been installed' on poles #2057-2060 on Rosedale Avenue as requested on Sept.16,1947. MARSDENSTREET DUMP: Peter Ritchie reported that Mr. Carney of Lawrence will write to the board in the near future with reference to a talk with Mr. Ritchie about the complaints made to the Selectmen in reference to the smoke from the fires in the dump. APPOINTMENTS: The appointments of Board of Fire Engineers, Dog Officer and Building Inspector was held over for one week.
