AMERICAN LEGION POST 219
The Board received an invitation from the Commander of the Legion to
participate in the Memorial Day exercises and parad~ to be held on Monday,
May 30, 1949. The board voted ~o accep~ the invitation with thanksand
to so notify the commander.
TREE REMOVALREQUEST:
Mrs. Oscar of 19 Stoningtun Street requested the removal of a large ~ree
in fron~ of her property which makes her house very dark and she canno~ have
a lawn because of the shade from this tree. The board voted to refer this
matter to the tree warden and a hearing set for May 23, 1949 at 7:25 P.M.
KImbALL SCHOOL:
Bids for t~ sale of the Kimball School Building were opened and Anthony
Csmasso of ~00 Foster St. bid $125.00 for the building and was awarded the
bid as he was the highest bidder. Other bids were from Anthony Bel!ia-$55.00
Francis G. Drisco~l, 78 Turnpike St. $40.00; W. Muzichuk, 198 Lincoln Ave.
Saugus, $25.00. Mr. Camasso agreed to clean up the place where the school is
and hoped he would be given reasonable time to remove the building.
UNION SCHOOL BUILDING:
The bide for the Union School buildingwere opened and the following bids
were received: Lowell Nuilding Wrecking Co. SI11.00;- W. Muzichuk, 128
Lincoln Ave. Saugus, $400.00;- Lawrenc~ Building Wrecking Co. $250.00;-
and ~he latter company also bid $I600 for building and land together~
,After some consideration the board, upon motion of Mr. Finneran vo~ed to
take the bids under advisement.
Mr. Coffin then made a motion that an ad be inserted ih the Tribune for two
or three nights and ask for bids for the building; for the land, end for the
building and land together. This would be in the classified section. Mr.
Finneran seconded the.motion end the vote was unanimous. Mr. Finneran then
suggested that perhaps.they could~sell the hoi!er also, by asking for bids,
as he understood that it was in good condition and.had only recently been
installed. Mr. Coffin will also include this in hisads for the tribune.
Bids will have to be in the Selectmen'sOFficeby May 23, 1949 at 7:30 P.M.
POLICERESERVEFORCE:
Mr. 2homson informed the members that they had received two names as eligible
for thenew police reserve force; David F. Roche and Joseph W. Lawlor.
Mr. Coffin made a motion that with only two names availableto fill a seven
man.vacancy, he would like to move 'that these two men be appointed it this
time. Mr. Finneran seconded the motion and the vote was unanimcusl ~ir. Roche
andMr. Lawlor both thanked the board for their consideration and stated that
they would try to fulfill their duties to the best of their ability.
Theboar~ then discussed the matter of provisional appointees and intermittent
polic~officers. There was some doubt in the minds of the board a~.to whether
they wanted t~ appoint, intermittent or provisional men and they suggested that
MissCam~bell be contacted and findout if it is necessary for these men to
be veterans if'not provitional appointees and the matter be taken under advise-
ment until nextweek. In themesntlme we will get more information on the
matter and.perhaps we can appoint two veterans who will fill in until September
when the~new list will be available.
COMPLAINT:
John' Riiey of Walmut Street complained about speeding on Parker Streetand
Mr.~ Finneran informed the board and suggested .that the matter be referred to
Chief McKee. The board agreed that this should~ done.
BOTTLED GAS-(PROPANE)(BUTANE) ETC.
Mr. Thomson informed the other members of theboard that Chief Hargreaves
feels that. inspections should be made with respect to bottled gas the same
as other inflammable liquids. The fee for this inspection is $.50 and the
board voted thatthis amount would be apprgved at this time for allfuture
inspections.
PAPERS IN CELLARS:
'Mr. Thomson also informed the board~that Chief Hargreaves and Highway Surveyor
Ira D. Carry had planned tn work together.to ge~ people to clean the papers
out of their cellars and they'will cooperate by the Highway Department picking
up all papers left out in front of the homes and tied in bundles and
Chief of the fire department will have one or two of his men arrange to burn
up the papers and thereby preven~ fire hazards in the homes and also in the
dump.~ Mr. Coffin felt that this board should issue e solemn warning to the
people and hope that they. will cooperate in this very good cause.
