BOARD OF APPEALS: Notice received that a hearing will be held on May 16, 1949 on the~appeal of the heirs-at-~aw of Thomas and Margaret Finn requesting s variation of the Zoning Ordinance in allowing them to sub-divide three lots into two lots at Beacon Hill Blvd. Town of North Andove is one of theabutters. MAY 16, 1949: The regular weekly meeting of the Board of S~lecmmen was held at 7:00 P.M. with all members present. Weekly bills and payrolls'apprcved~. JUROR DRAWN: Mr. Finneran drew the name of William Calder, 30 Annis Street,'Chauffeur to serve as a ~uror at Superior Court at Salem on June second for the transection cf civil business. SCHOOL DEPART~lENT: Communication received from Francis J. 0'Brien informing the board that two 'sik ~ear old youngsters had set a fire under the porch of the Brad- street school and that the police department had reported this matterto him giving the names and addresses of~the children. Officer'Donovan made the investigation. Mr. 0'Brian acknowledged the effective cooperation of the police in protecting thts~cheol property of the town. STREET LIGHT REQUEST: John Venture requested a street light on Mass. A, e. near Mifflin Drive and the board will check this location before ts~ing any action. 'FIRE DEPARTMENT: 'Chief James Hargreaves came before th~ board and s~ated that he had re~eived a letter from tbs Call firemen requesting that they get paid for dump fires which are more or less like forest fires. Mr. Hargreaves said that' the Perry St. dump is a nuisance and his men were down there for four hours one day. In losing time for this type' of work, they feel that they~oul6 be paid. He discussed the paper being collected by the highway department~ and he thought that Mr. Carry wo~ld contact him and he might be able to have it burned in the boilers of the Osgood Mill. Mr. Hargreaves. said he'believed that he would ha~e sufficient money for paying these men if the Selectmen was willing that they should be paid. Mr. Finneran said the mabter was alright with him if the engineers approved it. Mr. Coffin also agreed since we want fires kept down. Motion then'made that the Board of Selectmen approve the payment of rates~ to call firemen as approved by the board of Engineers, for dump fires during regular .hours work'to compensate for lost pay. Vote was u~animous. ' .... ~' CIVIL SERVICE: POLICE APPOINTMENTS: Mr. Thomson brought up the matter of provisional or tntermittentofficers to be appointment until a list is available and appointments are made therefrom. He explained that intermittent officers mus~ be Veterans and these men would bm used only when the regular reserve officers were notavailable.- ' L- Mr. Coffin made a motion' that John Donovan and Frank Dushame be appointed as intermittent police reserve officers subject to apprbval from'Civil Service. ASSESSORS: Mr. Coffin brought up the matter of getting records for the assessors to complete their figures in 9rder to set a tax rate. He said the bills· should be cut by July 1, and it'takes one month to make out the bill. He thought the board might contact Mr. Brasseur and me~ if they are anywhere near completion with their project. Mr. Brasseur came before the board later in the evening and informed them that the project is practically completed and they expect all cards to be complete this week. There are s few-industrial properties and stores not completed. They had some difficulties in ~t~ing into homes and had to go back. The board voted to write to Mr. Goodman and~ ask when he thought the work would be complete. DESKS IN UNION SCHOOL: Mrs. Bridget Dennis of 38 Ashland St. inquired about buying the desks which are available in the Union School. There will probably be about sixtydesks which will nc~ be needed by the School Department. Mr. O'Briemis willing that they be sold if tbs Selectmen feel so inclined.
